About NUSARA | Thai
NUSARA Thai operates as a Thai restaurant at 8-10 Castle Street in Christchurch, with a cocktail bar set into the same space. The kitchen serves Thai dishes and the room runs as a cocktail bar alongside the food, and the evening format is built around reservations. Tables are booked for a limited time slot, so guests are asked to vacate before the next reservation, and the menu covers Thai staples such as curries and basil mince dishes alongside starters including spare ribs and duck spring rolls. The drinks list covers cocktails and a small beer selection, with orders placed at the table. Cocktails and Thai dishes are served side by side in a single room, and prawn crackers are listed as a separately charged side. The restaurant sits within a few minutes of central Christchurch.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers describe friendly service and a pleasant setting, but the food draws repeated complaints. Several diners find the sauces overly sweet, naming the Thai green curry and Penang curry as cloying, while others report dry ribs, salty krapao with gristle, and curdled coconut milk. One notes dim sum and chilli beef as flavorful. A reviewer also describes feeling rushed by staff over a timed table.

“Friendly place but the food really let it down, the chef absolutely piles the sugar into everything so all the sauces are sickly sweet. the sauce on the spare ribs too sweet, the sauce in the Thai green curry way way too sweet that’s supposed to be a hot fragrant dish. By contrast the minced chicken krapao was way way too salty and the chicken had a lot of gristle throughout. In the end it turned out to be a very expensive evening £70 for two of us and we left most of the main courses. £4.50 for prawn crackers, i’d already ordered them before I knew what the price was, I won’t make that mistake again. £5 for a bottle of very average fizzy water, it won’t make that mistake again just have the tap.”

“Ordered a takeaway and it’s nowhere near as good as it used to be. The ribs dry and had no flavor with very little sauce. The Penang curry was too sweet and the coconut milk curdled, the mince beef in basil was ok but also very sweet. Had a crispy chili starter and it was dry and chewy. Extremely disappointed and don’t think we’ll be back as th least 2 takeaways we had was not great and last meal in restaurant was also just average.”

“We visited Nussara Thai in Christchurch last night and took advantage of the “get 4 starters, pay for 3” offer, ordering 8 starters in total. The service was excellent and the restaurant itself was lovely, with a good atmosphere. Unfortunately, the food was a bit of a mixed bag and ultimately let the experience down. The dim sum and chilli beef were definitely the highlights and had plenty of flavour. However, the duck spring rolls and beef ribs were very disappointing, as both massively lacked flavour and seasoning. The rest were ok but nothing special. It’s a shame because the service and setting were both excellent. We wanted to love the food, but overall it just didn’t live up to expectations.”

“Booked a table for 6, as we were seated we were told we must vacate the table before 730 as that is the next booking. Ordered drinks, gin arrived server did not know what is was, I ordered a doombar, a server arrived with a London pride, as I did not order this I turned it away. The manager came over to tell me they no longer have doombar, no one told me that. With drinks finally sorted our food started to arrive everything was great with the food, taste, presentation and all hot. This was unfortunately made non enjoyable by the staff hovering to clear tables quickly. By the time we had finished our meal and asked for the bill it had just gone 715, we then waited and asked 2more times for the bill eventually getting it at 740. They were obviously not in that much of a rush and no one was waiting. Unfortunately we will not be going back.”
