About Giggling Squid - Cardiff St David's
Giggling Squid at St David's is a Thai restaurant in Cardiff city centre, on St David's Dewi Sant, with a menu built around dishes shared across the table. The lunchtime Thai Tapas Sets put that idea into practice, and a lunch set menu with lunch deals runs alongside them. Salt and pepper squid is among the starters, and prawn pad Thai is a main, including a version made with a giant butterfly king prawn. Vegan options appear on the menu as well. The drinks list is large, with cocktails and non-alcoholic choices. Botanical interiors fill the dining room, which is decorated in bright colours. The restaurant opens daily and stays open later on Sundays.

Customer Review Summary
Salt and pepper squid is the dish reviewers name most, praised alongside the prawn pad Thai, the stir fried noodles and the Thai tapas sets, which one diner calls perfect for sharing. Others single out the duck spring rolls, chilli mushrooms, tender slow cooked beef and moreish prawn crackers, and a vegan diner found plenty of options on the varied menu. Complaints centre on value and flavour. One reviewer found the feisty chicken stir fry portion small and left still hungry, another calls a bottle of white wine a joke, and one says the cooking is adapted for Western palates and lacks punchy heat. Service is mostly described as friendly, though one reviewer found a server pushy about taking the order. One diner with celiac disease and an airborne peanut allergy describes the staff as super accommodating, with the manager greeting them at the door.

“Good food, we tried the chicken satay and salt and pepper squid for starters and the lunch set menu options of a fiesty chicken syir fry with rice and forager set. While the flavours of the food were good, the portion size was a bit disappointing for some items - especially for a mains of the fiesty chicken stir fry. My partner got a much bigger portion of curry rice and 2 starters for just a few quid more. The green curry had more vegetables than curry, and it is super healthy but a feels a bit dry to eat with rice. Still hungry after spending £45”

“This was my first time visiting Giggling Squid, so I wasn’t sure what to expect. I went on a Sunday and it was great to see they were open later than most places. Service was mixed. One member of staff came across quite pushy and kept coming back to take our order before we were ready, which made things feel rushed. When I asked questions about the menu, I didn’t feel like I was getting clear answers and at times it felt like there was a bit of a misunderstanding. However, another member of staff was excellent. She was friendly, knowledgeable, and made the whole experience feel much more relaxed. The food was the highlight. I travel around quite a bit and have a favourite Thai restaurant in Newcastle that I usually compare others to, and this is right up there with it. It didn’t feel like typical chain restaurant food at all. If anything, it felt like a chain that doesn’t feel like a chain, which really impressed me. The restaurant itself is also really nice. Bright, clean, and well decorated, with a great atmosphere. The main downside is the price. I used a £75 voucher and still ended up spending around £50 on top. Without that, it would feel quite expensive for what you get, even though the quality is very high. Overall, I really enjoyed it. Great food and atmosphere, slightly let down by inconsistent service and high pricing. I would come back, but more as an occasional treat.”
