About Lonely Mouth
Lonely Mouth is a Japanese restaurant at 401 Gloucester Rd in Bristol. It began in lockdown as a Japanese soul food pop-up, and matcha drinks on the menu rotate to new flavours every couple of weeks. The kitchen cooks karaage chicken and matcha French toast with berries, and ube basque cheesecake is a recurring dessert. Vegetarian and vegan options appear across the menu. In the evening, a small plates menu runs alongside a cocktail list. The space is small, with a shared large table and a window seat, and it usually has a wait. Vinyl records play, with DJ sets at weekends. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Matcha French toast with berries is the dish reviewers raise most, called unbelievably good with a generous portion of berries, and matcha drinks such as the ube matcha, a banoffe matcha and a matcha latte come up alongside it. Close behind is the ube basque cheesecake, described as light and fluffy and true to the ube flavour. Others single out the banana blossom karaage, crispy karaage chicken, and a pork belly plate with Japanese pickles, boiled eggs, miso soup and rice. One reviewer says the menu serves omnivores, vegetarians and vegans without half hearted dishes, and several mention the vinyl playing. The main complaint is slow food. One reviewer describes a very long wait for two matcha French toasts that arrived soggy and bland, at a shared table near the kitchen steam, and another found brunch slower than expected. One reviewer found prices higher than anticipated, though another calls them reasonable, and one finds the music quite loud. One reviewer recalls staff remaking a friend's drink after she knocked it over.

“Lonely mouth is the only restaurant/cafe I can think of that caters excellently to omnivores, vegetarians and vegans. None of the food items are half hearted attempts to cater to 1 type of customer, the whole menu is full of flavour as well as being beautiful to look at. I will always be back for the ube matcha too 😍”

“Absolutely delicious food and coffees with loads of veggie and vegan options. We had a very hearty brunch which we struggled to finish but not for lack of trying. Music is quite loud, but the atmosphere is lovely.”

“Been wanting to try this place for a while and it didn't disappoint! Very tasty matcha french toast with berries and a banoffe matcha to go with it. Staff was great and even remade my friends drink when she knocked it over by accident 😭”

“One of my favourite places in Bristol! From their incredible Japanese menu to ceramic tableware, vinyl playlists, they consider every detail thoughtfully to curate a great space. Love coming here for just a matcha or lovely nourishing breakfast. Look forward to try their evening menu as well!”

“Went for brunch with a friend, sitting at the window, the perfect spot for fun people watching! We both got the matcha French toast which was unbelievably good, and the portion of berries was so generous. The Ube cream was also amazing. The staff were friendly and helpful, but the food did take longer than I would’ve expected. The vinyl playing was a nice touch too.”
