About The House Cafe

On Gloucester Road in Bristol, The House Cafe is a cafe that runs on a walk-in basis with the menu displayed on the wall above the counter. The house special combo brings together frankfurter, bacon, poached eggs, bubble, hash brown, beans and mushrooms on one plate, alongside a full English breakfast and a bacon sandwich. Scrambled eggs are made with three eggs, and a vegetarian option is available for those who want it. Filter coffee comes with one free refill. The room is laid out with no music or menus at the table, following an old fashioned British cafe and diner style, with tables kept clean and well spaced. High chairs are available for families with young children. It opens daily during the daytime only, with service run from the counter rather than by reservation.

Customer Review Summary

Breakfast is the draw at this Gloucester Road cafe, with reviewers praising the full English and the house special of frankfurter, bacon, poached eggs, bubble, hash brown, beans and mushrooms. Close behind is value, with several calling the prices reasonable or the cheapest on the road, though one adds it is not the cheapest anywhere on Gloucester Road these days. Reviewers also mention a good bacon-and-sandwich style menu, a very good value vegetarian option, and a filter coffee that comes with one free refill, though one says it may take a nudge to get it. The cafe is described as clean and tidy, and the man running it as friendly without intruding. One reviewer calls it a proper greasy spoon, while another finds the staff not overly friendly. The main complaint comes from one reviewer who found the bacon sandwich and scrambled eggs, advertised as three eggs, not up to standard for a bill they felt was a bit expensive. Another reviewer ordered a BLT that was not on the menu yet, and the owner made one anyway.

“Love this place, value end of the breakfast places and good quality breakfast for the price. Very friendly nice man runs the place but doesn't intrude on your breakfast. Also you get one free refill on your filter coffee as well but you might have to give them a nudge sometimes :) currently £12.50 for full english inc coffee which is by far the cheapest on glos road.”

“My friend and I walked in late at night when the shop was empty, and the lovely guy that works there was so kind to us. He was so hospitable and caring, he even washed us some grapes to eat and enjoy while we sat and talked to one another. Honestly would go back again, the food is so good too. Hope he is doing well :)”

“I come here for a coffee break from work and find the atmosphere to be friendly and relaxed. It isn't costly and the food menu looks like great value. I didn't buy food this time but they do have a very good value vegetarian option.”
