About Smokin' Aces - Cocktail Bar & Whiskey Lounge
Smokin' Aces is a cocktail bar and whiskey lounge at 103 Commercial Rd. in Bournemouth's Triangle area, open since November 2010. Its drinks list is built around whiskey, and Imbibe named it the UK's Best Whiskey List in 2017. Whisky tasting sessions cover a range of whiskies, and the bar also serves cocktails. Booths fill part of the seating area. Music comes from DJs, and a live singer performs on some nights. Hen do groups book the venue, and their packages include a rum tasting afternoon. In 2019 the bar was a finalist for UK's Best Specialist Drinks List.

Customer Review Summary
Whisky and rum tastings anchor the praise here. Reviewers describe the whisky tasting as fun and informative, with a terrific range, and one group on a hen do package left a rum tasting afternoon merry. Close behind is the music, from a live singer to the party atmosphere afterwards and DJs playing a great mix. Cocktails and a cosy feel get mentions too, and most reviewers call the staff friendly, welcoming and witty, with one bartender giving good whisky recommendations. Service draws the sharpest complaint. One reviewer says a bartender kept using his phone and vape, raised a finger to make them wait, and only served after another bartender was signalled. Another calls the staff rude and says they make customers feel unneeded, despite liking the decoration and music.

“Walked in the guy behind the bar ignored me while playing with his phone. I said excuse me and got a finger raised at me to wait a minute while he hit his vape and continues to use his phone. I signalled the other bartender and before she could come he decided to serve me. I stated my drink then walked to the other end of the bar and started to dance at other patrons. That was the point I nipped out of this business. If you can't do basic customer service you shouldn't be customer facing!”

“I cant rate food as I didn't know it did food to be honest only gone late and enjoyed the music. Lovely little bar, great staff, great atmosphere and always good djs playing a great mix of music.”

“Very disappointing experience. I was sitting in a booth with friends when another customer tripped over my foot. I immediately apologised, but instead of accepting it as an accident, the situation escalated after he spoke to his girlfriend, who then started directing abuse towards me. What should have been a minor misunderstanding turned into an unpleasant confrontation that left me feeling intimidated and unwelcome. My group had been drinking in the venue all evening without any problems before this happened. I have since found out the people who had been rude towards me were friends with staff members so I feel there was a complete bias towards the situation. I understand that venues cannot control every customer’s behaviour, but I was disappointed by how the situation unfolded and by the lack of any apparent intervention to de-escalate matters. Unfortunately, this experience has put me off returning.”

“My sister and I visited last night for week day drinks. The atmosphere was great and the staff are incredibly friendly. I’d highly recommend!”

“This place is great for any whisky lovers. Had a few days away in Bournemouth and came across this place. A guy with glasses/beard who works in there gave some great recommendations for whisky and was having a good chat with him. Great music in there too and would definitely go back if I'm away there again.”

“Opened in November 2010 in the Triangle area of Bournemouth, Smokin’ Aces Cocktail Bar & Whiskey Lounge quickly became infamous for its party atmosphere, high quality cocktails and inclusive “come-one-come-all” policy. Staffed by a team of skilled, award-winning bartenders, Smokin’ Aces was one of the first independent venues in years to re-invest in live music in Bournemouth, a policy which is continued to this day. In 2017, Smokin’ Aces won the Imbibe award for UK’s Best Whiskey List and in 2019 was a finalist for UK’s Best Specialist Drinks List. Smokin’ Aces continues to receive awards, plus national and international recognition as a leading bar within the industry and an integral part of Bournemouth nightlife.”
