Quick info
About The Bake House
The Bake House is a cafe in Bournemouth, at 8 Southbourne Grove, where the owner works front of house and serves customers directly. Breakfast centres on a full English, and a large range of sandwiches and toasties covers the rest of the menu. Coffee is part of the offer too, including mocha. Dogs are welcome, so the cafe works for a stop with a pet. A large TV plays in the room at low volume.

Customer Review Summary
The full English is what reviewers return to most, with several calling it inexpensive and one saying it never disappoints. Close behind are the scrambled egg and salmon breakfast, cheese and tomato and tuna cheese toasties, and a wide sandwich range, alongside a tea selection that includes Redbush. Coffee gets mixed reactions, described as smooth and mild by one reviewer and overly hot and lacking flavour by another. The owner and staff are repeatedly called friendly, and one reviewer says the chef reheated the grill and fryers near closing time. A big screen TV is mentioned by a few, kept at low volume. Complaints are serious. One reviewer reports a cold breakfast, a cook handling sausages, cash and a dog bowl with one glove, and illness afterward, and says they reported it to environmental health. Another describes being aggressively asked to leave the toilet before ordering and cites a low hygiene rating. A third found grubby chair covers, sticky menus and a dusty bathroom. Even so, one regular still describes lingering after a meal, unhurried.

“Had the full breakfast this morning, plate and food cold, as I watched the cook, wear one glove, get sausages out of the microwave with ungloved right hand then take cash off a customer with right hand should have made me walk out, the cook was pleasant but as I started to eat and not eat the sausage, a lady came in with a dog, the cook then bought out the dog bowl holding it with the gloved hand, not once did he wash his hands or change the glove, when I got back home, myself and my breakfast companion were straight in the toilet with the runs. since then I am feeling sick and stomach unsettled, I will not be returning to this cafe ever Update. A week later still got the runs, unable to eat properly and losing weight. I have reported this place to environmental health”

“The customer service was lovely and food toasties we had were tasty & lovely and fresh. I enjoyed the mocha and my brother enjoyed the espresso. We had the cheese tomato toastie and Tuna cheese toastie all. Very relaxing atmosphere and good customer service as well. Would definitely recommend if you visit Southbourne. 😋☺️”

“The reviews were pretty polarised so I wasn't sure what to expect but went with an open mind. The owner/server was very friendly and welcoming and it was clear that he has a lot of regular customers. The restaurant and bathroom were a bit grubby: the chairs have fabric covers that could do with a wash and whilst the tables were clean the menus were sticky; everything in the bathroom was slightly dusty. The food was really very good: decent sized portions for a fair price and very tasty. The coffee was overly hot and lacking flavour. TV in the café is a bit odd but I suppose good if you're there alone, it's on quiet so not intrusive. Do not confuse with Bakehouse 24 which is a few hundred metres down the road.”
