About Bistro 8
Bistro 8 is a modern British restaurant on Park Terrace in Blackwood, housed in a historic building on the river with modern touches added. The kitchen has been cooking since 2014, and dry aged steaks sit at the centre of its British menu. Pulled pork and cheddar bon bons appear among the starters, and a cheesy garlic herb loaf rounds out the dishes people order alongside the mains. Tables are reserved in advance, as reservations are required. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
The garlic bread, also called the garlic loaf or cheesy garlic herb bread, is the dish reviewers raise most, with several calling it the speciality. One says it must be tried, though another found theirs went dry and hard unless eaten straight away. Close behind are the starters, where the pulled pork and cheddar bon bons and Cajun corn ribs earn praise, along with the salmon gnocchi, lasagne and a Sunday roast with generous portions and a well liked cauliflower cheese. Staff are often described as friendly and attentive, and the lunch menu is called good value. The complaints centre on service and consistency. A party of 20 felt rushed, with a birthday cake whisked away before photos and the bill offered at 9pm. Another table never received green beans with three lamb dishes and was told the kitchen needed checking. A surf and turf ordered well done arrived medium, then returned with only warm chips. Some found desserts and starters pricey, and the roasties were grey rather than crispy.

“I’d heard good things about Bistro 8 for months so I was pleased to finally give it a try. Overall we had a enjoyable meal, although some dishes stood out more than others. The starters were the highlight. The Cajun corn ribs were packed with flavour and the pulled pork and cheddar bon bons were easily the best thing we ordered. They slapped! I went for the venison burger which was well cooked and juicy but a little heavier than I’d expected. Looking around the table, I think the pulled pork burger or lasagne may have been the better choice. The crème brûlée had a lovely flavour but was missing that classic caramelised crack on top. I’d probably give the garlic bread a miss next time. It looked great but didn’t quite deliver, so I’d rather put that money towards a couple more starters or another drink instead. Overall, the food was well presented and we had a good experience with polite service. It felt slightly pricey for what we had but I would return for say a birthday etc… and next time I’d definitely order more starters.”

“Visited Bistro 8 last night as a group of four. It’s widely known as one of the top-end dining options in Blackwood, and the menu prices certainly reflect that reputation. Unfortunately, the overall execution, basic service, and attention to detail on the night just didn't match the premium price tag. We started with two starters to share: the pork bon bons and the leek and cheese on sourdough, coming in at around £9 each. Both were just "okay," but at that price point, you expect something a bit special. The leek starter in particular was underwhelming—it felt much more like a side dish you'd get with a Sunday roast than a standalone restaurant starter. Because three of us had ordered the slow-cooked lamb rump for our mains, we actually ended up saving and repurposing the leeks to bolster our main courses. Things got more frustrating when the mains arrived. We had been informed beforehand that they were out of tenderstem broccoli and agreed to swap it for green beans. However, when the three lamb dishes turned up, the green beans were completely missing from all of them. We flagged down a waitress halfway through our meal to ask where they were, and they eventually brought out a single, tiny side dish. When we challenged this and asked if they were bringing out the rest for the other two members of our party, we were told she would "have to go and check with the kitchen." I know management often replies to reviews asking why issues weren't raised mid-meal, but we did raise it—and being told they'd need to consult the kitchen over a missing side dish when you are already halfway through your main course just isn't the level of service you expect for these prices. We didn't bother pursuing it further as our food was getting cold. To make matters worse, we noticed a pretty glaring hygiene issue while we were there. A nearby table of 8 was being cleared. Only 6 people had used it, leaving 2 pairs of cutlery untouched at the end. Instead of clearing everything to be properly washed, the staff left the "clean" cutlery in place and proceeded to spray the table down with a liquid cleaning bottle. The chemical mist sprayed all over the remaining cutlery. The table was then remade with the chemical-soaked cutlery left exactly where it was for the next party. That totally put us off We didn't bring this up as to not cause a fuss with other people eating in the dining room, and the next party also only had 6, so luckily they did not use the soiled cutlery either. The fourth member of our group had the lamb burger, which was decent, but the clumsy service and poor attention to basic standards really let the night down. If a venue is going to charge top-tier prices, the execution needs to be sharp. Based on last night, it just wasn't, and that's a shame. Total bill came to over £160, and in our experience, with the food we were served and the experience we had, we wouldn't be returning.”

“Nice food but asked for our surf and turf to be well done but came after 30 mins only medium..returned for another 10 mins to rectify but chips were only warm then! Shame as looked lovely. Deserts were lovely but pricey £9.25 each. Very busy for a week night”
