About HANBAO

HANBAO is a hamburger restaurant at 46 Floodgate St in Birmingham, founded in 2016 as an east-meets-west burger spot that serves its food in steamer baskets. The menu centres on burgers such as Odd Future and Piggie Smalls, and vegan burgers are available for those avoiding meat. Sides run to Big Buddha Belly fries, which are waffle fries topped with barbecue sauce and pulled pork. Dessert comes as sundaes, and the drinks list covers both cocktails and mocktails. The room pairs Asian and industrial styling. Bookings are made through the website, and walk-ins wait at the bar for a table. Parking outside the restaurant is limited.

Customer Review Summary

Burgers draw the most praise, with reviewers describing full flavour and large portions, from the Big Kahuna special with grilled pineapple and three cuts of beef to the Piggie Smalls with pulled pork and the Shanghai Noon. Close behind are the sides, especially the tiger style fries, the big buddha belly fries topped with pulled pork, and the Korean Mac Balls. The brownie and banoffee pie sundaes are the desserts named. Servers are described as quick, attentive and helpful with menu choices, and one reviewer likes the industrial vibes and the food in steamer baskets. The complaints are small but specific. One diner found the fries portion smaller than expected, another was unsure about soft drink sizes the menu does not show, and a diner with allergy concerns had to ask because the chicken burgers are buttermilk and the menu does not say so. One reviewer notes only one vegetarian option, and another found the music loud. A takeaway order arrived without the cutlery requested, which made the pulled pork fries tricky to eat.

“I should caveat that this review is for a *takeaway* order - I did not eat in at Hanbao. I ordered the ‘juicy’ burger and the ‘big buddha belly’ fries, both pictured. The burger was very tasty, albeit the patties were a tiny bit overcooked for my liking. None the less the portion size was large and flavourful. I absolutely loved the big buddha belly fries - essentially potato waffle fries with a barbecue sauce and pulled pork topping. Again, the portion size was good, with a lot of pulled pork. My only quibble was that there was no disposable cutlery included with my order, despite me requesting it - this made eating the fries a bit tricky! I’d recommend Hanbao and look forward to going back,”

“We went in around 18:30 today. Got sat down immediately. Our waitress was absolutely lovely (I wanna say her name was Jenny but I can't remember and I feel so guilty) and the excellent service! Helped my friend pick out their cocktail and helped me decide between the Piggie Smalls and the buffalo and Blue (Went for the Piggie smalls given my love of pulled pork). Food was absolutely divine, the tiger bites, wings and fries were uber crispy and tasty! Will be coming back next time I'm in Brum! The Banoffee Pie Sundae was also to die for! A little sweet for my friend but me and my other friend loved it! 10/10 would recommend! Worth every penny!”

“We turned up quite late on Saturday night after strolling down from our hotel a 20 min walk away. I’m so glad we chose to dine at HANBAO on our one night in Birmingham after reading about it as one of the recommended independent restaurants on a website article from a local foodies. On arrival, we realised we probably should have booked a spot on the easy to navigate website. A friendly woman waiter told us it might be around 5 minutes if we waited at the bar, and it felt like she was making something happen for us around the many bookings. We were looking through the menu and it didn’t take long at all before we were directed to a table. I love burgers and have built up quite a few experiences around the world with them. The sweet and salty combinations, flavoursome quality patties combining three different cuts of beef cooked to perfection and stand out creativity that went into my Big Kahuna (the special) was a lifetime burger highlight. Every bite to the very end was delicious which often isn’t achieved with other tasty burgers. The sauces, grilled pineapple, freshly created bun, meat and cheese perfectly complimented each other. It was a burger that tasted unique in the best way. It was rich but I was locked in for this type of meal. The sides were also highlights in their own right. Loaded chips other establishments could only dream of with the Asian influenced flavours created. Somehow we had room for the brownie sundae. Each element to this dessert came together like magic… again one of the best desserts I’ve ever tasted with nothing scrimped on. It will be difficult to go back to the typical burger with a standard patty and bun, typical chips and standard dessert offerings from restaurants/cafes and pubs after this experience. The price point was different to dining in London and elsewhere in the UK and Europe, it felt noticeably more affordable but I would have paid more. The ingredients, skill and care created dishes that were significantly better. Our waiter Ranya’s friendliness, attentiveness and genuine excitement for me to not miss out on the final Big Kahuna burger for the week really elevated our experience. It was a stand out service from my time in UK and Europe. HANBAO’s creators do things differently and this doesn’t come at the cost of delicious outcomes, their unique creations deliver the best flavours. Appreciate their website for its clean, easy to navigate aesthetic and functionality. Their decision to take proper photos of items for discerning potential customers and archive each creation shows how much they care about the works of culinary art they have created in their history.”

“Best burger joint in the UK! Me and my fiancé have been visiting Hanbao Birmingham around 6/7 times a year for the last 3 years now, and also travelled all over the place and never came across a better tasting place. Love the unique flavours here, always cooked perfectly and staff are great. Attached some pics, I’ve had almost everything in the menu and most specials. One thing to know the parking is limited outside the place, and some local car parks have poor reviews. But we’ve always been fine!”

“Food - best way to describe it is a flavour attack and in all the best ways. Unbelievable food from the sauces, to the meat to the crispiness of the chips Service - friendly quick and super attentive Atmosphere - love the Asian meets industrial vibes. Can’t lie the food in the steamer baskets is an elite concept And for the size of your burgers I think it’s pretty well priced/cheap”
