About Country Cousins

Country Cousins is a restaurant on Westbourne Terrace in Bideford, cooking English comfort food and carvery roasts. An old-fashioned sweet trolley travels around the dining room alongside the Sunday carvery, bringing dessert to the tables. The carvery offers a choice of 3 meats with a large selection of vegetables and potatoes. Staff serve it alongside self-service and carry plates to the table. Vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options are on the menu, including a nut roast on the carvery. Booking is taken for Sunday lunch, and tables turn over quickly when the room fills. Dogs are welcome. Paid parking is across the road, and the sea is a short walk away.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return above all for the Sunday carvery, with a choice of three meats and plentiful vegetables, and the vegan nut roast and Moroccan roast get specific praise. Close behind is the old fashioned sweet trolley, which several single out alongside the dessert cart. Others name the fish, chips and peas with crisp batter, the ribs, sirloin steak, gammon and eggs, and a thick, crispy-edged bacon bap. Staff draw steady praise for being attentive, including plating up for a disabled diner and carrying plates to the table. Some caveats come up. One reviewer found the ploughman's ordinary after an octopus starter they loved, and another could not add a tip to a card payment and suggests bringing cash. Busy Sundays meant a short wait for a booked table for one party, though another was seated straight away, and one table was reset and reallocated before the diners had left the restaurant.

“Sunday lunch carvery was excellent, choice of 3 meats and loads of fresh vegetables. Very reasonable price. Loved the old fashioned sweet trolley that travelled around the restaurant. They all looked very tasty and those we had certainly were. Lots of staff, making sure everything ran smoothly and very attentive too. Nice touch was although you served yourself the staff took your plate back to the table. Was very busy, we booked for 1:45pm but arrived 10 mins early and luckily a table was just being vacated. When we left, our table had been reset and reallocated before we left the restaurant. Would definitely recommend as a great place for Sunday lunch.”

“We went on a Sunday when they were doing their carvary and the food was immaculate, they had multiple options for vegans and vegetarians. I ordered the nut roast sweet potato one and my mum ordered the morrocon but roast and we shared half and half and it was so delicious and packed with flavour. The vegetables were delicious and versatile with many options. The staffing their were amazing and welcoming joking with us and talking with us, we even heard their back story from them. I have never had such positive interactions with waiters and it made the night.”

“Stopped here while by the beach looking for a quick bite with my coffee and ordered the sausage, egg and bacon bap. Really impressed — everything tasted freshly cooked, including the bread. The bacon was particularly good: thick and meaty, almost like gammon, with crispy edges without being dry. Simple breakfast bap, but done really well. Definitely made the beach stop that little bit better!”

“My mum loves coming here and she took me when I was visiting her last week. I was really impressed with the entire experience. It's quite tricky to be both vegan and gluten free in North Devon, but Country Cousins makes it easy. The staff were really friendly and my mum told me that they always give fantastic service. Would recommend to anyone as it has a wide range of food and drink options.”

“Stopped off for a light lunch, my wife and I had a ploughman's for main each and an octopus starter, and the kids a prawn sandwich firstly the service was impeccable 👌 the actual restaurant was around half full creating a nice atmosphere. The octopus was absolutely amazing unfortunately the ploughman's couldn't live up to the starter.it was ok but not anything special. All in all the food was ok I bet the carvery was good but it was far to hot to try it.....maybe we will go back to give it a go?”
