Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the home cooked pub food at keen prices, with the Sunday roast turkey dinner, the lasagne with ciabatta garlic bread, and fish and chips with mushy peas named as highlights. The steak and ale pie also stands out for one diner. Close behind is the setting, with a large beer garden by the river, a bouncy castle for children, an ice cream machine, and live entertainment on sunny afternoons. Staff behind the bar are repeatedly called friendly and welcoming, and real ales and a good drinks selection get a mention. Criticism is mixed. One reviewer found the food disappointing and the menu bland, and another received a chicken curry that tasted like a bland spinach soup, with the waitress taking the plates away without comment. One reviewer gave a single star because the menus and event posters look AI generated, though they called the food really good. A few mention that some benches need attention and that Sunday lunch gets very busy, with one advising arriving sooner rather than later. Another diner closed a Sunday afternoon in the garden with an old school 99 ice cream.

“The food here is genuinely really good. But everything graphic in the place, from the menus to the promotional posters for events, is AI generated, and that's why it gets one star from me. There's a lot of talk in this country about people taking jobs. Well, this is what taking jobs looks like. Every time a business uses AI instead of hiring a graphic artist or designer, it takes work away from the people who actually do this for a living. "It's cheaper" or "it's quicker" aren't valid excuses. It's lazy, and it costs real people their livelihoods. I know a lot of businesses defend this tooth and nail, but I will die on this hill: it looks tacky. I hope they do better.”

“A proper unpretentious pub in a lovely spot near the river, serving proper unpretentious and good value grub. I doubt they'd be able to do food at such keen prices if Mr Beaudelaire had his way - to give a one star rating on the basis of self-produced graphics seems most odd. Presumably he makes a point of not using self-service petrol stations.”

“We visit the pub for lunch it was very busy and the food was first class. There is a small carpark but a little way along the road there is another carpark.”

“Sorry no photo. I'd forgotten what a lovely setting this place was in and the nice outside space that is on offer. My first menu choice wasn't available so I quickly chose the curry as an alternative. In response to my question I was told it was a chicken curry but when delivered to the table it turned out to be what looked and tasted like a very bland spinach soup with bits of chicken in it. I hate spinach and would never have ordered it had spinach been mentioned on the menu. Having only eaten the rice, chicken pieces and naan I did ask the waitress if it was spinach (it was that bland I could only tell from the hundreds of green bits in it) but she wasn't too sure and just took the plates away without comment despite me describing the uneaten 'soup' as "yuk". I'm pleased to say my friends meal looked (and according to him) tasted lovely and my experience won't put me off going here again but I won't order a curry!”

“Sitting outside in the beer garden with live entertainment and some food. What a perfect Sunday afternoon. We will definitely go back, they even have an ice cream machine for the old school 99's :)”
