About The Elaichi
The Elaichi is an Indian restaurant in Belper, with its dining room on the second floor above 84 Bridge St. The kitchen cooks Indian and Bangladeshi dishes, including tikkas and baltis. Diners can order two smaller curries in place of one larger one, which lets a table try more of the menu. Curries come with pilau rice and naan, and the garlic and cheese naan is one of the breads. Poppadoms arrive with a choice of dips and condiments, and the team recommends dishes and asks about spice level. Cobra and a local IPA are on draught. The restaurant is open daily, evenings only, and tables are booked in advance.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often single out the garlic naan, described as light and puffy and "the star of the show" for mopping up sauce, alongside the flavourful curries. Close behind are the poppadoms with fresh condiments, a pickle tray one reviewer insists on, a lamb shank said to fall off the bone, and the option to try two smaller curries instead of one larger one. Reviewers also mention large portions, Cobra and a local IPA on draught, and staff who suggest dishes based on what guests like. One diner who could not manage the upstairs dining room had a table brought down to the ground floor. Complaints centre on pacing and service. One reviewer waited about twenty minutes past a promised table time, then another ten before ordering, and was talked over when raising a doggy bag packed by the diner. Another was rushed out mid-drink despite empty tables. One found a chicken tikka dupiaza too spicy, and the dining room was called a little dated. Several praise a host who seated a late arrival upstairs for a full sit-down dinner.

“Visiting from the US and just spending one night in Belper. Enjoyed a beautiful dinner after a recommendation from a local at the pub nearby. Even though we arrived within an hour of closing time, the extremely friendly host/server invited us upstairs for a sit-down dinner. The curry dishes were quite flavorful and the garlic and cheese naan was the star of the show.”

“This is an absolutely fantastic Indian restaurant & takeaway. Food is fantastic, staff are exceptional (and are very good at recommending dishes based on what you tell them you like), the drinks are great (Cobra & a local IPA on draught) and the physical restaurant is lovely. A gem!”

“Booked a table for 8pm and were told there'd be a 10-15 minute wait but they gave us menus to read. At 8.30pm I asked when our table would be ready and we were finally taken to it but then left another 10 minutes before they took our order. Food was excellent though. Some was left over so we asked for a doggy bag and we had to pack it ourselves rather than them offering. Complained to the waiter who talked over me twice. Appalling service. Such a shame”

“Perfect meal and service tonight at The Elaichi. Kam and his team were fanatic. It was also a bonus that you could try 2 smaller curries, rather than 1 larger one. Will definitely be going back!”
