About The Portsmouth Arms

The Portsmouth Arms is a thatched pub and restaurant on Hatch Warren Way in Basingstoke. Inside, a dining room sits alongside more informal eating areas, and the bar has its own seating area. The dessert menu pairs a Beeramisu with sticky toffee pudding, so the pub's beer side carries into the sweet course. Food is served on hot plates, and the bar pours a range of draft beers. A private area is available for group gatherings. Dogs are welcome, and drinks and food can be ordered through an app.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often single out the friendly, attentive staff. Several describe servers who remembered order details and made a family with a baby feel welcome, and one team carried high chairs out to the patio. Food comes close behind, led by the sticky toffee pudding, which one diner calls the best they have had. A children's menu that comes with ice cream or sorbet is also praised as fantastic with allergies. A few also mention the big beer garden and a good selection of draft beers. The main complaint is slow service. One group found their app-ordered drinks sitting on the end of the bar after a wait, then had a reserved sign placed on the table they had booked, and left without trying dessert. Another party's order was never put through, though staff made up for it with money off the bill. One reviewer found the food average and a bit bland. A birthday gathering in the private area ended with everything boxed up to take home.

“We visit frequently as this pub backs onto our garden and always have such a great experience! The service is consistently brilliant, and Chloe and Saskia especially are always so friendly. Nothing is ever too much trouble and our baby is always welcomed, Such a lovely local cosy pub with a great atmosphere – we’ll definitely keep coming back! 😊”

“Lovely food, beautiful building and a gorgeous atmosphere - high chairs available, children’s menu is perfect and comes with ice cream or sorbet - fantastic with allergies - couldn’t be more helpful - thank you to all the team 🥰 our greeting was so welcoming, staff were so helpful, happy to carry high chairs out to the patio and so friendly”

“Lovely Pub with big Bier Garten and cosy interior and great atmosphere and very good customer service. Our server Emily was great, friendly, fast and excellent memory. Food arrived quickly and it’s nicely presented on hot plates which is a bonus. In terms of taste it was unfortunately average and bit bland. If they tweak a bit the food recipes then it’s a definite 5 star Pub Restaurant. Overall great Pub and from what I saw there is a good selection of Draft beers. 🍻”
