About The Stag

The Stag is a pub on London Rd in Attleborough, just off the A11, with a hotel attached and a bar. A carvery runs at weekends, including Saturdays and Easter Sunday, and on weekday lunchtimes. It offers a choice of meats such as turkey and pork, served with roast potatoes and Yorkshire puddings, plus a selection of vegetables. A chef serves the meat at the carving deck, and diners can go back for seconds of potatoes and vegetables, which suits anyone arriving with a big appetite. A coffee bar on site serves cakes and bar snacks, so there is an option outside carvery times. Meals come with table service. The pub is open daily.

Customer Review Summary

The complaints are specific. One reviewer found the extra carvery dishes unlabelled, so diners kept asking the chef what they were, and some skipped items for fear of allergens. Another reported small plates, oversized joints, dried out peas and hard, stodgy stuffing on Easter Sunday. A vegetarian-minded diner noted many vegetables were cooked with non vegan ingredients. One reviewer suggests booking because a Wednesday lunchtime was busy, and staff getting a carvery plate for a guest on crutches stands out.

“Went here for my wife's birthday for which friends booked on our behalf, the servers were friendly and polite, the food was excellent, belly of pork was amazing, an array of deserts, our friends bought a cake which the servers brought out and sang happy birthday, overall a really good experience at reasonable prices, plenty of seating and room. Will certainly visit again.”

“Visited for my friends 40th Birthday last week and was very impressed with the carvery! Had the carvery a couple of times before in the past but I think this time was by far the best! Everything was cooked to perfection and was really flavoursome and tasty; the roast potatoes were amazing and very crispy, great selection of vegetables, succulent turkey, huge crispy stuffing balls and it was really nice to get full size proper butchers pork sausages too! However I do have one small criticism with the carvery and it's that none of the extra dishes which are not common to get on a carvery are not labelled! This means that you constantly have to ask the chef what they are and they are often either very busy serving customers, or have walked off from the carving deck. There were about 3 or 4 dishes on there which I had no clue what they were and the chef seemed to be a bit irritated with me and my friends asking. A couple of things I didn't bother asking about in the end and therefore didn't end up having as I wasn't sure what it was, and unfortunately may have missed out on something I would have liked. I also feel that its not the best or safest practice for people who have allergies to not have dishes labelled. I understand they may change daily, but if the management team could just implement small little blackboard name cards which can be written on with chalk and rubbed off, this would be hugely helpful!!! I have seen this kind of thing done in other restaurants so it wouldn't be hard to do, but it has been like this for years. I feel that it must get quite frustrating for the staff to repeat themselves several times to customers, but it's also very frustrating for customers having to ask what lots of dishes are. Turns out one dish was some sort of stew (still wasn't really clear on what it had in it) some sort of potato dauphinoise (unclear if it was a in a cheese sauce so I left it) some lemon and pepper pork bites in a crispy batter (these were very nice!) and 1 or 2 other dishes which I didn't feel I could ask about. After the carvery, 3 out of 5 of us ordered desserts. I had the bakewell slice with amaretto pouring cream, which was very nice, it really made a difference having amaretto flavour to it, I just wish you got more of it as the cream got soaked up too fast. It would have also been better if the bakewell slice was served warm; it had come out the fridge and was cold which I was a bit surprised and disappointed by, but it was still nice. Service was fine, staff professional and polite, it was also a great atmosphere, very busy/thriving and we didn't feel pressured to leave.”

“Wow. Easy parking, warm welcome, great spaced seating, food was outstanding. Was not expecting carvery open on a Saturday and oh what a carvery too. Lots of choice. Not too great in the vegan front as lots of veg were cooked using non vegan ingredients, but the vegan in the party certainly didn't leave hungry. Service was swift and we were not pressured to leave, which was nice for our party. Highly recommended.”
