Customer Review Summary
Steak draws the most praise at San Carlo, with diners singling out a sirloin, a shared Chateaubriand, and steak with prawns. Close behind are the lemon sole, avocado prawns, lobster and seabass, with tiramisu also mentioned. Several describe a lively room with upbeat music and a central bar that became the focal point, though one partner found the music too loud. Staff earn repeated warmth, and one server explained which dishes were halal for a guest. The complaints are about pacing and execution. One diner waited just over an hour between starters and mains. Another found the service rushed and was handed a boiling hot plate with no warning. A salad was called too salty, and one couple booked a quiet table but was seated between two large parties. The harshest account describes rubbery calamari, the wrong calzone, cold dry fries, and water that never arrived after two requests. The manager offered a curt apology with a reduced bill, and a free tiramisu came too late to matter.

“Always have a great experience at San Carlo, and Iqra is a big part of that. I see him quite often when I come in and he’s always genuinely lovely, friendly and welcoming. His service is consistently excellent and he always makes us feel really well looked after. He’s a credit to the team and definitely deserves a mention — great guy and great service every time! Top fella”

“Dinner was lovely, the sirloin steak was amazing. The team are a credit to the business. Ollie was a true gentleman. Very kind and entertaining. Ciprian was so helpful, explained what foods were halal and suitable for my friend, and made sure we had a lovely time full of laughs and good vibes. Thank you to everyone”

“We moved recently to the area and was hoping this would become our new haunt, but after a very unfortunate visit will not be returning and cannot recommend it to friends or family. Our starter to share was calamari. I've had calamari in so many places but I've never had one I've been unable to chew properly, it was so rubbery. We ate what we could, we were very hungry as we hadn't had the chance to eat all day, but it was a struggle. There was so many pieces you couldn't get through, so we left a fair bit. A sad start to our meal - I am unsure if it was fault of kitchen or waiter, but we ended up with the wrong calzone, the calzone itself even though the incorrect one, was okay to eat, but it concerningly had a small sharp bone in it, which pierced my partners gum, and now sore (picture included). I had ordered a pan-fried, smashed, crumbed chicken breast, which I presumed wouldn't include bone and cartilage (as most places do not include bone for meals like this), but apparently that's standard as served, so had the unpleasant surprise after cutting through and chewing on a chunk of cartilage that I thought was chicken, which put me off the rest. We had ordered a bottle of water to share too, but the water never turned up, despite asking for it twice. The fries we had ordered were luke-warm/cold and dry. I have never felt so let down. Some mistakes can be ignored but as each thing unfolded I ended up sat there in disbelief. Did we just get unlucky or is this the standard here? Never in my life have I actually complained to a restaurant before. We dine out often, mistakes happen, and usually if something goes wrong it can be fixed, but the entire meal from start to finish really did not go down well. I had to say something. The waiter that served us was very polite and friendly, he was probably the highlight of the visit, he did a great job of connecting to the customer. Although after a period of waiting I did need to stand up and try to attempt to politely get somebodies attention as we really wanted to leave, but I do also appreciate they were busy, but we had also been waiting a while. The actual restaurant itself looks quite nice, nothing that would knock your socks off, but pleasant. The manager unfortunately gave the impression when I explained our disappointing visit that he didn't really care. He slapped down the reduced bill on the table with a very indifferent sounding "sorry about that". There was no real attempt to get us to return as guests. No questions about what they could do, or an attempt at forming relations, or trying to find a way for us to return to give them another chance etc. There was an offer of free tiramisu but by that point we just wanted to leave. Which says a lot in itself, as we both love tiramisu. Really sad visit. I hope that these mistakes are not repeated for other customers. Either way, we won't be going back.”

“An unfortunate visit - it was a busy Friday evening in fairness, but the length of time between receiving starters and mains was unacceptable - just over an hour. We were about to ask for the bill and leave without the mains just as they arrived. There was some explanation about a large party all ordering steak which didn't make much sense to me given that the next table arrived after us and got mains, and a desert then left while we were still waiting for our mains. In fairness my prawns and steak were both very good - my wife's pasta dishes were OK - but when you eat out your experience is easily spoiled. The waiting staff were professional and attentive but couldn't seem to expedite the order. Three stars is slightly generous but two stars wouldn't be quite fair.”

“The restaurant feels like you’ve somehow ended up at a terrace restaurant in southern Italy at midday, sun blazing. The food is genuinely good. The lemon sole was a standout and the avocado prawns were delish in a way that makes you immediately want to order them again. Flavors were vibrant, confident, and properly Italian without any of the usual English hedging. The atmosphere carries the room well and the kitchen clearly knows what it is doing. Service though... Most of the team were attentive and warm, exactly what you want. One waiter in particular had bags of personality and was charming enough in the right moments, but the energy leaned a little too peer-to-peer for a restaurant at this level. Not unfriendly, just a touch rough around the edges in a way that broke the spell slightly. In hospitality, the small things matter, and a warmer, more polished presence goes a long way. Still a strong visit overall. The food alone makes it worth coming back, and with a tighter service deep dive this would be a very easy 5 stars.”
