Quick info
About La Contenta
La Contenta is a Mexican restaurant on Norfolk Street in New York, run by a native chef-owner who focuses on neighborhood dining around Mexican food plus mezsals and other agave spirits. Much of its character comes from that chef-owner-led format, where the kitchen and the agave selection shape the visit as a single, cohesive experience rather than a broad cantina lineup. The signature plate is La Contenta Nachos with Steak, and Enchiladas with Chicken anchors the menu alongside The Mayan, giving the food side a composed, dish-driven focus. The mezcal and agave-spirit list runs alongside the menu, so drinks and food share equal standing in how the place works. Reservations are advised because the neighborhood setting and the focused format draw steady interest.

Customer Review Summary
La Contenta draws consistent praise for its Mexican food and agave-spirit cocktails, with the chile relleno with seafood, the tacos, and the guacamole singled out as standouts, alongside the El Mayan and El Mariachi drinks. Reviewers describe the space as cozy and tight, with a small number of tables and bar seats, and several note the housemade quartered tortilla chips. The most frequent complaint is that the food is overpriced for the portion size, with one reviewer calling a tiny guacamole bowl expensive and another saying the containers were small and not filled to the top despite the strong flavor. A few also mention slow service, including chips arriving only after entrees. One reviewer notes the seating felt tight for plus-size guests. Several suggest visiting during happy hour for better value, and one highlights a monthly cocktail-making class.

“Food was AMAZING and absolutely worth the visit. The tacos and guac were sooo good. Only small feedback is that the seating felt a little tight for plus-size guests, but overall we had a great experience and the food was top tier.”

“This is one of my favorite restaurants in all of NYC. I go about once a month before or after catching a movie at the Regal Essex, which is just two blocks away. The food and drinks are great, the the food is terrific, the prices are …”

“This place is an overlooked gem. Good food! Good drinks! Good drink line up! Good service! Music forward. Housemade quartered tortilla chips. Super cozy - 6-8 tables and 7-8 bar seats. They do a great job! I’m a mexi-snob and I’ll be back. …”

“Great taste — but extremely overpriced for the portion size. I’ll be honest — the food was excellent. The black beans were a 10/10, and the rice was solid, around an 8 or 9. No complaints on flavor — it was well-seasoned and fresh. But for $13, the portions were way too small. Even if the containers had been filled to the top (they weren’t), they’re still very small to begin with. If you’re someone who doesn’t mind paying more for good taste and smaller portions, this might work for you. But for me — I can’t justify that price for so little food. There are people in this area who can afford that without blinking, but I’m budgeting every dollar. I need value, not just flavor. Great food. Just not worth the price. I won’t be going back.”

“Ventured out for our 26th wedding anniversary. Enchiladas Suizas de Pollo, Tacos de Pollo, guacamole, El Mayan and El Mariachi for drinks. Dinner was excellent, drinks even better. Service and atmosphere is always a plus. Thanks for hosting us through the years.”
