About The Trough
The Trough is a modern British restaurant on Stone Ln on the outskirts of Yeovil, run by a family who also keep a cafe and a gift shop under the same roof. Large windows look over an open field and rolling Somerset countryside. The kitchen cooks home made British dishes, with ingredients sourced from local artisan producers wherever possible. Breakfast includes a full English and the "Trough" breakfast, while the lunch menu features aged beef with trimmings. Desserts and coffee finish a meal. The shop inside sells freshly baked bread, locally ground coffee, mugs, artisan homewares and candles, so visitors can take something home. Dogs are welcome in the outside area.

Customer Review Summary
Breakfast draws the most mentions, especially the full English and the Trough breakfast, which reviewers call tasty and great quality, along with a hollandaise sauce one diner rated the best in a long time and eggs cooked as asked. Close behind are the burgers, with one reviewer calling theirs among the best they have had, and the desserts and coffee, praised by a dog walker and by a family that otherwise left disappointed. Reviewers also describe huge windows over open countryside, outdoor seating with blankets, and friendly, attentive staff. The main complaint is cost. One couple paid almost the same for breakfast as for a modest drink order and judged the English breakfast not worth its price, another found the lunch menu pricey apart from the bacon or sausage baps, and one objected to a discretionary service charge on the bill. Food misses came up too: Sunday aged beef arrived extremely raw for one family, with one plate taken off the bill after staff first said it could not be done, and the Thai crab cakes were dense with potato and light on crab. One table was given no water and no dessert spoons.

“We had a lovely full English breakfast, great quality food. Coffee was average. Only annoyance is the “Discretionary” service charge that gets put on your bill… this is not the US… it’s a farm shop cafe in Yeovil, ridiculous!”

“Thai crab cakes were a bit dense with starchy potatoes and not much crab in them. The smoked haddock was light and flavorsome and fresh. Lunch menu was a bit pricey unless you opt for the bacon or sausage baps.. Nice atmosphere”

“I was quietly impressed with my first time lunch visit here. The premise is well decorated and has some fantastic veiws of the rolling countryside from the restaurant. My food from the reasonable menu was also good (one of best burgers i have ever had). All served by some excellent attentive staff. As my visit was in February, i wasn't tempted to sit outside, but there are tables outside for the warmer months. There is also a coffee shop withing the building, which looked equally lovely. The venue is a bit out of the way and you'd need to know where it is to visit, you're not likely to stumble across it. I'd definitely go back.”
