About Sylheti Spice

Sylheti Spice is an Indian restaurant at 29 Market Pl in Wantage, serving curry. It operates as BYOB and serves no alcohol, so guests bring their own drinks to have with the meal, and tap water is the only drink the restaurant provides. The Swan pub stands opposite, which means diners can collect drinks there and carry them over to the table. What goes in the glass is the guest's own choice, whether it comes from home or from the pub.

Customer Review Summary

Bringing your own drinks is the draw reviewers raise most. Several note that only tap water is served and that drinks can be fetched from the pub across the road. Praise for the food centers on flavour, with diners calling it authentic, mild, quickly prepared and reasonably portioned, and a few mention friendly staff and a friendly owner. Some regulars say they have never had a bad meal. A sizable minority report the opposite. One reviewer describes a King Prawn Biryani heavy on rice and peas and a Sag Aloo, both served cold, with thick, floury, salty chapatis. Another found the butter chicken greasy and salty, the tandoori chicken leg burnt to charcoal, and the garlic naan tough and dry, with raw garlic overwhelming the mint yoghurt. A third describes a meal swimming in oil. One diner says no one approached the table for a long stretch and that they had to go to the kitchen area to pay.

“Salty, chewy & over cooked… We ordered butter chicken, coconut rice, tandoori chicken (starter) garlic nann & mint yoghurt sauce. The rice had so much onion and butter pepper in it you couldn’t taste the coconut at all. The tandoori chicken leg was burn to the point the bone was like charcoal. The butter chicken was made With tandoori pieces in a very greasy salty sauce. The nann was very tough and dry & the mint yoghurt had so much raw garlic in it it was inedible. This will be the last time we order here as this is the 2nd inedible meal we have had but the last one was 2 years ago so we gave them a chance this time.”
