About The Beach Shack
The Beach Shack is a cafe at Steephill Cove in Ventnor, with tables set right by the sea wall. At high tide, waves reach the steps and can put some tables out of use. The menu centres on a crab sandwich, which also comes as a crab baguette, with other sandwich fillings alongside. Soup arrives with chunks of tiger loaf, and the crab soup runs next to a soup of the day. A cream tea brings scones and jam, and the hot drinks include tea and coffee. Bottled beer is the only alcohol on offer. Dogs are welcome at the tables. The cove is reached by a step path down, and an honesty car park sits up the hill.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers come mainly for the crab sandwich, served on soft white bread or in a baguette, with several praising the fresh crab and the generous amount of it. Close behind is the crab soup with glass noodles, chilli and chunks of tiger loaf, which one regular called superb, along with a prawn sandwich described as full of prawns. A cream tea with warm scones and thick cream, and mint chocolate ice cream, also earn praise. The sea view, with waves reaching the steps, is the other constant, and staff are described as friendly and relaxed. The criticism centres on the food and the range. One reviewer was underwhelmed by the basic sliced bread and a chicken soup without much flavour, and found the pot of tea over brewed. Another called the menu expensive and the drinks list thin, with only bottled beer and no wine. High tide left some tables unusable on one visit. One dog owner recalls staff bringing a fresh bowl of water and a treat for their dog.

“There's a honesty car park up the hill making it very easy to park and wander to the coast and have lunch at the shack. Staff friendly and helpful and the WiFi is appreciated. Sandwiches had pretty basic sliced bread with local crab, prawns ham or cheese with a half packet of crisps in a pot for a tenner. Had the soup of the day which was chicken, and it came with what looked like two chunks of tiger loaf and two sachets of catering butter. It was nice but didn't have a strong flavour. Pot of tea was a bit too strong for us, it was over brewed in both of our opinions. Location is wonderful but was underwhelmed with the food.”

“Just lovely.... the food was great and tasty and the staff were so good. They brought out a fresh bowl of water and a treat for our dog. We will be back when we're next in IoW.”

“By far one of the best hidden gems we found in the IoW this week! Honestly the amount of crab in baguette to £ ratio was outstanding, service so kind and the setting!!!!!! Just wow! Thank you for welcoming us with open arms! Freddie did have some food from your shop too we promise 😅😊🥰”

“I've been to the beautiful Steephill Cove many times, and have often had a crab sandwich and/or coffee at the Beach Shack. But on this visit, on a cool stormy day in May, with waves crashing onto the sea wall right outside the cafe at high tide, I decided to try the crab soup... What a great decision that was! It is absolutely superb - plenty of crab, glass noodles, and some chilli to spice it up, with a coriander garnish - plus two big chunks of the freshest tiger loaf. This has to be the signature dish of the Beach Shack and I have no idea why I haven't tried it before. Attentive service with a smile only adds to the experience - highly recommended!”
