About The Lost Kitchen Devon
The Lost Kitchen Devon is a wood-fired restaurant in Tiverton, set in the Mid-Devon countryside, with indoor seating inside a converted long barn. The kitchen cooks around its wood-fired oven, and the menu includes meat, fish and vegetarian and vegan dishes. Seasonal, Mediterranean-inspired plates use British ingredients, and the pizzas are built on organic sourdough bases. Breakfast brings merguez sausages and shakshuka. Desserts and cakes are made in house, and the drinks list covers freshly ground coffee and loose leaf teas. Gluten free options are labelled on the menus, so guests can find them without asking. The National Trust Knightshayes Estate can be reached on foot from the restaurant.

Customer Review Summary
Breakfast and lunch dishes draw the most praise, with the shakshuka and merguez sausage singled out for the right level of Moroccan spice, alongside mushrooms and eggs on toast described as a focussed full English. Close behind are the charred corn and feta salad, and desserts such as the Eton Mess with roasted plums and the Mango and Blood Orange Sorbet. Reviewers also mention the garden and terrace, the countryside views, clear gluten free labelling and attentive, friendly staff. The main complaint is walk-in access. Three reviewers were turned away without a booking, two of them when the place looked half full or empty. One says the staff member did not check whether a table could be found, and another, a returning customer with a toddler, had expected outdoor seating to need no reservation. Several diners say to book ahead because it is so popular. One reviewer who had booked was offered a choice of indoor or outdoor table and chose indoor for the more comfortable seats.

“Really disappointing experience. We turned up as a table of two and were immediately told there was no space unless we had a reservation. This was despite the restaurant appearing to be only around half full. What made it particularly frustrating was that we checked the website straight afterwards and could have booked a table for just **10 minutes later**. The member of staff didn't even check whether they could fit us in, ask whether we would be happy to wait, or find out whether we wanted food or simply a drink. She just said no and walked off, which came across as incredibly rude and dismissive. We would have completely understood if the restaurant had been packed, or if we'd arrived as a large group expecting to be accommodated without a booking. But there were only two of us, plenty of empty tables, and apparently availability 10 minutes later according to their own booking system. We would have happily waited for a table or sat and had a drink in the meantime. It seems bizarre to turn customers away without even checking availability when the restaurant clearly isn't full, particularly when those same customers can stand outside and make a reservation online for a few minutes later. The lack of effort and the way we were spoken to was what really left a bad impression. A simple "let me see what we can do" would have made a huge difference. Unfortunately, we left feeling completely unwelcome and took our business elsewhere.”

“Great summer breakfast sitting outside in the sun. Mushrooms and eggs on toast was kind of like a focussed full English, and the merguez sausages had just the right level of Moroccan spice to complement it. Really excellent food in a lovely setting.”

“Lovely setting, lovely location, beautiful surrounding countryside. Popped in on off chance we could get a table but no luck. We needed a reservation. Didn’t look exceptionally busy but maybe under-staffed or large booking arriving later? Shame but we will call in advance if we pass this way again.”

“Stunning wood-fired restaurant in Mid-Devon with beautiful countryside views. Listed in the Good Food Guide. Our wood-fired garden menu features seasonal Mediterranean-inspired dishes using British ingredients. Delicious wood-fired pizzas with organic sourdough bases, homemade desserts, cakes and the best cheeseboard! Freshly ground coffee and loose leaf teas. Walk from Tiverton or National Trust Knightshayes Estate. Eat outside in fine weather. Booking strongly recommended - our kitchen and service team operate at set capacity, so we're often fully booked even when tables appear spare. Call or book online.”
