About Haystack Cafe

Haystack Cafe is an independent coffee shop on Brynhyfryd Square in Swansea, serving coffee alongside breakfast, brunch and lunch, with ingredients sourced locally. Breakfast comes out in a frying pan, and mini milk churns and mini shovels stand in for teaspoons. Customer Review Summary

Breakfast is the main draw, with reviewers praising a huge cooked breakfast served in a frying pan, a basic breakfast with an XXL option, and a lil farmers breakfast that suited a child. Close behind are the brunch specials and drinks, including a blackberry iced matcha and glow bowls in wooden bowls, while the mini milk churns and mini shovel teaspoons are called a novel touch. Several describe friendly staff and a cosy atmosphere with nice music, and one returning couple still want to try the pancakes. The criticism centres on value and consistency. Two reviewers say the sausages and bacon seemed pre-cooked or frozen, and one reports an egg stack with freezing cold hollandaise and an egg missing its yolk. Others call the coffee overpriced, mention an extra charge for decaf, find the tables too close, and felt staff rushed diners to finish. Even so, one party arriving at a packed cafe scanned a QR code at the entrance, waited in the car, and got a text that their table was ready within minutes.

“Wanted to go there for a really long time as everyone was saying that this place is a “must go “. I decided to leave a review based on a few factors: Location The place is not the best located and the parking is limited but ,I have to admit ,it has nearby parking which is not that bad ,so overall location,I would say it is okay. 4/5 Atmosphere/ Space The place seems very small and a bit crowded in my opinion as it wants to feel cozy but ,for myself ,the tables are a bit too close .3/5 Food As you can see in the pictures, the food looked amazing but tasteless. What really disappointed me was that the bacon and sausages were pre-cooked which it is not something that I was expecting to receive, The ingredients don’t feel premium and what put me off ,was the fact that the food was pre-cooked (A big no FOR MYSELF ) The taste was not great either . 2/5 Pricing The pricing (which didn’t bothered me at the beginning )was too high for what it offered. Almost £6 for a coffee (with oat milk and vanilla flavour) I think it is a bit overpriced . The breakfast in the skillet was not worth the money either . I don’t mind paying for quality, but in here wasn’t the case. 2/5 Staff/service Staff seemed friendly but seems like in a constant rush and trying to put pressure on customers to eat their food and go.3/5 Overall experience I wanted to try it as everyone was hyped about this place but it seems that if you have a good marketing team and advertise a lot , it won’t matter what you serve to people . My opinion way overrated and not worth it . I think there are more local coffee shops/restaurant out there that don’t have a strong marketing (social media posts ) that are far better than here Just my honest opinion based on my personal experience.”

“As it was the week for Abi’s to have free coffees, I had to come to grab one! The server was patient for me to choose a coffee as there’s so much choice. My friend and I both ordered the glow bowls which were served in these cute wooden bowls, very aesthetic. The atmosphere was cosy and pleasant with nice music playing in the background. Looking forward to coming back soon!”

“What a unique little place, loved the atmosphere, the decor and the food was plentiful, good quality and delicious. Staff were very friendly and welcoming. I had a basic breakfast which was huge and they actually do an XXL, my husband had scrambled egg and beans on toast with cheese and chives. The breakfast served in a frying pan, the mini milk churns and mini shovels as teaspoons were such a novel touch. We look forward to returning 💓 We did return but they do not accept cash, so will not return”

“This was our second visit, after the first one a few months ago wasn't great. We decided that we would give it another go, and so glad we did. We were seated quite quickly after grabbing a coffee and waiting on the sofas. Coffee was much hotter this time but disappointed that they charge extra for Decaf. And Over £9 for 2 coffees. Food this time was absolutely delicious although a little pricey, but happy to pay if it's good. Unfortunately again we weren't asked if everything was to our liking, and that to me is not good restaurant etiquette. On the way out we got to chat with Claire who was front of house/manager I'm assuming for that day and we explained about our previous visit. She was interested in our comments. We will definitely visit again as we need to try the pancakes, they look absolutely amazing. Fingers crossed for our next visit.”
