Quick info
About Mamma Italia
Mamma Italia is an Italian restaurant on The Ashbrooke in Sunderland, where reservations are required. The menu covers traditional Italian cooking, from pasta dishes and pizza to a range of meat and seafood plates, with portions and plating in the casual-dining mould of the category. The dining room is set in a converted house on a quiet suburban street, with the team running a single sitting that finishes in the evening. A private dining area at the back takes larger groups, and a small front terrace opens onto the pavement in warmer months. A takeaway service runs alongside the dining room for diners who would rather eat at home. Payments are settled at the table, and the same team has run the kitchen for several years.

Customer Review Summary
Service draws the sharpest split, with several diners describing staff as lovely and quick to fix billing mistakes, while others call waiters slow, hard to flag down, and the manager unhelpful. Food draws gentler praise, though a few find it basic and pricey for the portions. One longstanding diner describes a particularly poor visit.

“Visited here for the first time last night the food and service were exceptional. had one tiny hiccup with the bill as he'd put both starters through twice but it was quickly snd politely rectified. did not know this was right on my doorstep will definitely be back!”

“Over charged should of been happy hour, had to sdk to get it sorted, waiters were slow and useless, and the manager had no customer service experience”

“Absolutely appalling service today, such a disappointment. I have been a customer since 2019 and this is by far the worst experience I've had, I have never been treated like this in a restaurant it was a shock. I felt the whole experience was rushed and spoilt. As a single parent the cost of this food it's a treat for me to come out on occasions, but after today's antics I shall not be back. You should consider customer service training.”
