About Unorthodox Roasters

Unorthodox Roasters is a coffee shop in Stirling old town, at 12 Friars St, with a garden. The team roasts its own coffee, and the menu carries a variety of roasts alongside cold brew. Hand drip coffee is made to order, and the beans are sold to take home. Mocha and chai sit on the drinks list, and tea comes in a range of blends. On the food side, toast and marmalade covers something simple, and lemon polenta cake is among the baked goods and pastries. Seating is split between a downstairs area and an upstairs area. The shop is open daily, daytime only.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers return to Unorthodox Roasters mainly for the coffee, with hand drips, cold brew and a mocha singled out, and the chai and a tea selection also earning praise. Close behind is the food, including toast and marmalade, a salmon dish, lemon polenta cake and a range of fresh pastries. Several describe the staff as friendly, welcoming and knowledgeable about roasts, and one reviewer bought beans to take home after the hand drips. The atmosphere is called cosy, especially on a rainy day, and a few mention a secluded upstairs area and a garden. Seating is the recurring complaint. One longtime regular says the rearranged downstairs now makes finding a table a gamble and visits less often because of it, while another wishes there were more small tables instead of one big one. One diner also found the frangipane slice very dry and suspected it was a few days old. Even so, a visitor from Melbourne said the coffee hit the spot.

“A very lovely café with a beautiful garden. The coffee was excellent, of course. Very friendly staff.”

“This was perfect. Darcy, Jon and Sully were AMAZING! Coffee was the best I’ve had on this vacation. Only wish there were more small tables… not sure why there is a big one in this small space. Everything else was perfect.”

“Really love Unorthodox - great coffee, best toast and marmalade I've ever had, and the folk there are always welcoming and chatty. The only negative thing I have to say about it is the change to the seating.. there used to be plenty of tables to sit at downstairs, but now it's been rearranged and you're lucky if you manage to get a seat. I've found myself going there less and less because I'm assuming I'm not going to get a seat.”

“Great coffee shop located in central Stirling! They have lovely coffee, a good selection of pastries, and simple yet deliciously food. They also have ample indoor and outdoor seating.”
  • Lana Svitankova
“Amazing little gem of a coffee place. Feels extremely cozy, especially on a rainy day. Hand drips were both amazing, so we got beans to take home. The selection of beans is quite wide, so happy to take this piece of Scotland back home to remember the trip by (for a few days at least 😁)”
