About Birch Tree Cafe

Birch Tree Cafe is a coffee shop on New Rd in Stamford, run as a community café that employs young people with Down's Syndrome so they can build workplace skills as part of the team. It sits just off the A1 in Easton on the hill. A cake case by the till holds plenty of cake options, and the savoury side includes scones, with a cheese scone among them, and bacon baps with crispy back bacon in a soft white roll. Soup is served at lunch, and picnic baskets are on offer for those who want something to take away and share. Families will find a children's play area with toys inside. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary

Cakes and scones draw the most mentions, with one reviewer calling the cheese scone the best they have ever had and another noting a cake case with plenty of options. Coffee comes close behind and is described as lovely, with one diner calling the cappuccino the best in a very long time, though another found the filter coffee bitter. Crispy back bacon baps in a soft white roll and a choice of soups also earn praise, and one reviewer calls the food homemade and delicious. Several describe a bright, welcoming community café with staff who have learning disabilities, and one asks visitors for patience. The complaints are about pace and detail. A busy weekday lunch meant a long wait for food, and another visit brought slow service, sandwiches instead of the panini ordered, and tables left uncleared. One regular wishes for more lunch choice. Outside, reviewers enjoy the patio flowers and the play area for children, and one visiting dog was given a bowl of water and biscuits.

“really nice cafe to go to for lunch or coffee, classic cafe menu with a cake case by the till and meals available for kids. also a nice outside area and play area i think. we did go midday on a Wednesday so the cafe was quite busy, but we found a table outside; we did wait quite a while for our food (which was fine by us as we weren’t in a rush).”

“Pulled off the A1 to avoid the dreaded 'services'. This community run cafe is a delight and the food is excellent. Just a few minutes off the A1 it's well worth a visit. We liked it so much we called in on the way home too.”

“We discovered it one day and it was a lovely place to be. We go a lot these days. The staff are lovely and helpful. Only one tiny thing, we wish there was slightly more choice for lunch.”

“Whilst this is a beautiful cafe with lots of offerings. The service was slow and although we ordered panini's we got sandwiches. The cleaning up process from the flow of customers was non existent. Maybe this was down to the heat but such a shame with a pace with so much promise”
  • Zoe Burtle
“This is the most beautiful little cafe ever. The cafe employs members of staff with a learning disability so please ensure you have some patience although every member of staff was absolutely amazing when we went. Barely any wait for our food which was all homemade and delicious. The coffee and cakes are stunning. I love that there is a space for children to play with toys and an outside space for them to run around. This is my new favourite place to come for a coffee with my two young children. They do picnic baskets for kids. A perfect lunch spot.”
