About The Akash
The Akash is an Indian restaurant at 99-101 Albert Rd in Southsea, run by a family as a balti house since the 1970s. The kitchen cooks classic Indian dishes, and a meal here starts with poppadoms brought to the table alongside the first drinks. Poppadoms with sides can also be added to the order. For groups, the restaurant seats parties of nine and larger gatherings, and a big group can be given its own part of the dining room.

What reviewers say
Reviewers most often mention prawn biryani, samosas, soft naan and large curry portions.
Customer Review Summary
Most reviewers praise the food, describing large portions full of flavour and authentic spices, with the prawn biryani and its curry side dish singled out as delicious. Close behind are the samosas and soft naan, and one reviewer notes the Bangladeshi style dishes. Staff, the manager and the owner are repeatedly called friendly and welcoming, and one party of nine without a booking was seated straight away and served quickly. The criticism is less common but specific. One large group found the dansak and korai lacking in the sweet and spicy character they expected, sent back a lamb tikka they said had no flavour, saw their order forgotten, and was billed for poppadoms they never had. Another reviewer was charged for chutney, and a third received a cold plate that was swapped for a hot one immediately. One large group was given its own part of the restaurant, and the manager brought round an Olympic torch for everyone to hold for a photo.

“At Akash, the food was basically like catering food for 20 people plus — very hit and miss. The actual dishes tasted nothing like they should have tasted. One was a dansak, which is supposed to be sweet and spicy, but it didn’t taste of either. The other was the korai, and it just tasted sweet. They actually forgot the order, so they had to cook it quickly. It came piping hot, the chicken was questionable, and it tasted like it wasn’t very good quality. It honestly tasted like my mum had quickly thrown together a random curry at home — it certainly wasn’t a korai. We had to send back the lamb tikka because the only thing that resembled a lamb tikka was the colour. You might as well have given me a piece of meat with food colouring on it. There was no flavour whatsoever. To be fair, they happily took it back. The service was awful. They knew we were coming with 20–30 people, but they were completely ill-prepared. Everything took so long. As I say, the food was questionable. They just threw food at us like it was fast food, with no quality whatsoever. The bill then came and it was wrong. We had to get it changed because they had added things we didn’t eat, including poppadoms and the sides for the poppadoms that we never had. To make matters worse, the waiter was so stressed while sorting the bill out that he was talking to me in a panicked voice while holding a calculator, saying that I should just take off whatever I thought I should and shouldn’t be paying for. While he was speaking to me, he was actually spitting as he talked, to the point where I had to tell him to calm down and stop spitting. All in all, it was a very, very poor experience. They knew a lot of people were turning up, yet it just felt like they threw food at us and, other than that, we were simply fed and left.”

“Spendid. Gorgeous food..great service. Only point I'd like to make. The plate bought out was cold. I was offered a hot plate and it was immediately bought out. Why not just serve hot plates? Will return.”

“My family and I were there yesterday; it's a great place. The food is wonderful, and the service is even better. The manager served us; he was incredibly kind, friendly, and pleasant. It's definitely because of people like him that the place deserves the best.”

“First ever time sitting down for an Indian and oh my goodness. The food was absolutely delicious and the staff were so welcoming and friendly. Portions we the perfect size in my opinion and the flavours of the curries were exquisite. We were a large group and the manager accommodated us in our own part of the restaurant, nothing was too much trouble. They even brought round the olympic torch for us to all hold and take a picture with. Very pleasant service and excellent food, will definitely be returning!”
