About The Dowry
The Dowry is a cafe in Shetland at 98 Commercial St, where some tables have views over the harbour and others do not. The menu includes Chicken Balmoral and seafood pappardelle, with Basque cheesecake as a dessert. Allergens are marked on the menu, and vegan and vegetarian dishes are labelled. Booking ahead is needed for both lunch and dinner, and the cafe gets busy when a cruise ship is in town. Dogs are welcome.

Customer Review Summary
Fish and chips is the dish reviewers raise most, with diners calling the fish moist and the fries crispy outside and fluffy inside. Close behind are the Basque cheesecake, the seafood pappardelle and tagliatelle with chunks of fish and prawns, and a smoked fish cake with leek puree that one pair ordered on both visits. Others praise the bang bang cauliflower, the nordic board with smoked salmon, mackerel pate and herring, and local beer and Shetland Reel Gin. Servers are described as friendly and attentive, and harbour views from some tables come up often. The main complaints are about cost and limits: one diner found pasta steep until seeing the amount of beef cheek, another called prices quite high, and one wanted a burger or sandwich on the evening menu. One found the fish a little greasy, and one noted a prompt reminder to vacate the table. Several say booking ahead is essential, especially when a cruise ship is in town, and one dessert made it home in a takeaway box and was devoured before long.

“Lovely people who took us in despite a last minute decision on our part. Cozy atmosphere. The menu was not overly expansive, which is good. We had the nordic board, which is excellent and includes smoked salmon, mackerel pate and herring. My spouse had the Buddha bowl, which she enjoyed greatly, and I have the seafood tagliatelle - the pasta was well cooked and the sauce was rich, flavourful and had nice chunks of fish and prawns. Good selection of drinks as well. Very cheerful server, with excellent conversation!”

“Amazing meal. Fresh, tasty food along with some lovely local beer. How can it get any better? Brilliant service too. Can’t wait to return.”

“Lovely welcome, professional, caring and courteous service overall. The evening menu catered for all. Staff are also sensitive to customers' food allergies. First time I was prompted such a question ever in a public eatery. I opted for the vegetarian dish, and a dessert. Both were delicious. A slight transitioning time (a few minutes) was respected politely between main and pudding. Da pud, the Basque cheesecake is a delight and deliciously recommended! However, be aware of a prompt table vacating time reminder, especially if you take the time to savour your food or are a slow eater... Overall, I was very satisfied and I left an additional tip on top of the cost of food and automatically added service charge... Table booking is essential to avoid disappointment. Thank you all very much. 🙏🏻✨”

“Exceptional meal here today. It was a special meal with friends and Libby looked after us like we were royalty. We had the window seat and enjoyed the view of the cruise ship tenders coming and going. We ordered the bang bang cauliflower, haddock croquettes and onion rings to start. Superb, especially cauliflower. We then had fish and chips, Balmoral burger, and two cheese burgers. Everything was delicious. We also enjoyed the local Shetland Reel Gin. It was a memorable visit and made our visit extra special.”

“Fabulous staff with great service. The bread was fabulous and my husband loved his fish & chip. I wasn't that impressed with the evening menu though; it needs more variety and at least one burger/sandwich. Prices were also quite high.”
