About The Original Maids of Honour
On Kew Rd in Richmond, The Original Maids of Honour is a family-run tea room and tea house that has served customers since 1860. The business works as both a bakery and a tea shop, so the Maids of Honour tarts share the counter with pies, sandwiches, salads and cakes. That range covers a savoury lunch as well as a sweet stop. The shop sits at 288 Kew Rd, with the baking and the tea service run together by the same family.

“A wonderfully distinctive place that feels like a small piece of old England preserved in modern London. The low tiled roof, timber-framed windows, vintage signage, greenery and the old delivery van outside give it enormous character before you even enter. The atmosphere is traditional and slightly nostalgic rather than polished or contemporary, which is precisely its charm. It feels more like a long-established local institution than an ordinary café or bakery. Definitely worth noticing when passing through Kew, even simply for the building and its wonderfully old-fashioned English appearance.”

“We went to The Original Maids of Honour specifically for their scones and desserts, and we were definitely not disappointed! We ordered the high tea, the carrot cake, and a cheese and onion pastry. Everything was tasty, but the carrot cake was a real standout with a lovely, distinct hint of ginger that made it unique. The cheese and onion pastry was perfectly baked and savory. Coming here felt like a truly authentic British tea room experience. It was absolutely worth it, and I highly recommend it if you have a sweet tooth!”

“One of my favourite places to go. Super cosy, “oldie woldie” with a log fire. It’s like you’ve stepped back in time to old England. And then there’s the amazing food. The pies and sausage rolls are my favourite. Beautiful pastry. Plus the cakes and the famous Maids of Honour tarts are super nice. English breakfast is great too. Quality ingredients. And to top it all off, the staff are always lovely and welcoming! A must visit or else you’re really missing out!”
