About Pilchards at Port Gaverne
Pilchards at Port Gaverne is a beach cafe and restaurant in Port Isaac, with decking tables at the front that sit a few yards from the sea at high tide. The menu changes daily and follows a tapas style of small plates and sharing platters. It has a seafood focus and Spanish-inspired dishes, with octopus among them. Dishes come out as they are ready, and an open kitchen runs the line. Cornish roast potatoes are available as a side, and cocktails are on the drinks list. Vegan and gluten-free options are available. Reservations are required, and dogs are welcome. Parking nearby is very limited, so visitors use the public car parks up the hill and walk downhill to the restaurant.

Customer Review Summary
Diners return most for the tapas-style seafood, with octopus named most often alongside fresh scallops and a monkfish ceviche style dish. Close behind are the BBQ puff bread, prawn panang curry, Asian slaw and a cod special, with Cornish roast potatoes as a side. Reviewers call the food fresh and excellent, and the cocktails, friendly staff, sunsets and harbour views also draw praise. One reviewer says vegans and gluten-free diners are well catered for. Several suggest booking and arriving early, and one recommends two to three items per person. The caveats are modest: one reviewer notes ingredients reused across dishes and some plates not at the perfect temperature, one calls the price on the high side, and nearby parking is described as very limited. Most still find the cost reasonable for the quality, and one lunch for a wedding anniversary was felt to be well justified.

“Pilchards is our favourite restaurant when visiting the area. The food is excellent - fresh seafood at it's best and excellent quality ingredients creating very tasty meals. On this visit we ate fresh scallops, a monkfish ceviche style dish and octopus followed by fresh gunard, steak and a pork ribeye. A special mention must go to the wonderful team providing the service. Over the last two years we have witnessed on several occasions this incredible team provide excellent service, whilst being hammered by demanding guests and the team take it in their stride. The ladies are top class. My advice to guests is to book your table and go early to avoid disappointment.”

“Had a superb lunch yesterday to celebrate our wedding anniversary. The food was outstanding and the two servers were really friendly and chatty. Price was on the high side but then you are paying for high quality local produce in a beautiful location so felt it was well justified. We live an hour away and will definitely be back!”

“Went to Pilchards with the family for a late dinner. The food was absolutely superb, cooked to perfection and the cocktails were amazing. The atmosphere was beautiful and the waitress was very helpful and made our experience more enjoyable. She advised us on how to order as we were first time diners and the menu was more like a tapas. I would advise an order of a sharing platter with two sides. If you avoid a sharing platter and choose a small plate then two sides will be plenty enough for one person. I had a small plate of octopus and one side (cornish roast potatoes) wishing I'd ordered bread but my family shared their sides with me so I was all set. The price is what you'd expect from a Michelin star restaurant and the food is very much worth what you pay for it, faultless. Highly recommend!!!”

“Fantastic food and really attentive service. It has a lovely cosy atmosphere. Everything we had was delicious and fresh. It’s a tapas style menu so served when ready but this added to the experience for us. It’s an open kitchen which we also liked. Very reasonably priced for the service and fresh produce we had. Would highly recommend”

“Pilchards at Port Gaverne is our stunning sunset beach cafe 30 seconds away from Port Gaverne Hotel. At high tide, the sea’s only a few yards away from the tables on the front decking. The perfect spot to enjoy delicious food cooked by our head chef, Craig Small or to enjoy a cocktail whilst watching the world go by. We have plenty of outdoor seating available at first come first served or if you would like to definitely secure your table with us we do have the option for you to book directly online now! We have bookable outdoor tables and also indoor tables for if you feel the need to shelter away from the sun. The menu changes daily. Snack at tapas, share a plate or have one all to yourself.”
