About Angel Lane Chippie
Angel Lane Chippie is a fish and chips takeaway in the centre of Penrith, at 17 Angel Ln, established in 1928. The menu offers both cod and haddock, and the fish is fried to order. Chips and peas sit alongside, and the curry sauce comes in an Irish version too. A Lunchtime Takeaway Special is also offered. Customers order over the counter downstairs, then carry their food upstairs to eat in the 35-seat restaurant. Tables cannot be booked, and the format is walk-in only.

Customer Review Summary
Large cod draws the most praise, described as fried to order, fresh and white, with a light, crispy batter. One reviewer found the haddock lovely and better than an earlier visit with cod. The chips and peas are called very good, and the curry sauce comes up repeatedly, described as spicy, thick and with a kick. Staff are called friendly and efficient. The complaints are fewer but specific. One reviewer found a lot of the chips bruised, and another reports an order made wrong with no offer to fix it, along with a concern about staff handling money and food and eating behind the counter without washing hands. A reviewer also explains that the upstairs restaurant works like a kiosk, with orders placed downstairs and food carried up. One diner had the Lunchtime Takeaway Special piping hot at an outside table, and another describes a huge large fish with large chips left unfinished beside it.

“What a lovely surprise of a find. The large fish was huge and the large chips I couldn't finish. Very enjoyable.”

“Touching the money and the food, all while eating behind the counter and not washing your hands seems like a terrible thing. The curry was great. They made the order wrong but didn’t even offer to make it right.”

“We were staying in Penrith and decided to have a Friday night ‘chippie tea’. We’re so glad we chose Angel Lane as it was great. We just walked in and ordered over the counter. We asked for large cod was fried to order. The fish was beautiful, fresh white and the batter was light and crispy. Very good chips and peas too We’ll definitely be back next time we stay in Penrith”

“My first time here. Had a good review so came here. The fish was fresh and cooked well. The Irish curry sauce was nice and thick with a kick. My only disappointment were a lot of the chips had bruises which was off putting. Overall it was good but not the best.”
