About The Merchants of Spice
The Merchants of Spice is an Indian restaurant in Norwich, set in a converted pub at 127 Yarmouth Rd. The kitchen serves its lamb shank rogan josh in a bucket, which gives the main course an unusual presentation. A tikka platter is also on the menu, and the naan arrives with a slightly toasted bottom. Reservations are required, so tables are arranged ahead of the visit. For groups, a large round table seats six.

What reviewers say
Reviewers most often mention lamb shank rogan josh, tikka platter, toasted naan and chicken tikka masala.
Customer Review Summary
The lamb shank rogan josh is the dish reviewers raise most, described as tender enough to fall off the bone and served in a bucket, with one calling it the standout of the evening. Close behind are the tikka platter, the lamb sag and the chicken tikka masala, plus naan with a slightly toasted bottom. One diner with a gluten intolerance found plenty of choice, and another says the flavours come through rather than burning hot. Several praise friendly, attentive staff who are not intrusive, and one describes a mix-up with a dish handled immediately. Another notes a server brought out an ice cream with a candle for a father's birthday. One reviewer calls this branch a converted pub without the elegance of the city restaurant. The one negative review calls the food bland and the worst ruby in East Anglia, with service rated poorly apart from the women working there. Several mention the large car park.

“Possibly the best Indian meal I have had. From starters to mains the food tasted fantastic. You can really taste the flavours rather than it being burning hot. Great service and a lovely welcome too. Can’t wait to come back.”

“Had an excellent meal with friends and absolutely can't fault a thing. Heartily recommend the lamb shank rogan josh, absolutely delicious. My partner has a gluten intolerance so at most places the choice is quite restricted but absolutely spoilt for choice here. Can't wait to have a meal here again!”

“Had a great meal out for my dad’s birthday. Everyone enjoyed a lot. Service was friendly and professional. Our server Teny (name on recipe) was great, and made my dad’s day by coming out with a candle on his ice cream.”

“okay so food was bland. woeful. service isn't what you expect. The reason they got 2 stars on servicewas because of the ladies working there, really good laugh. They were 5 stars, but the rest brought it down that much. the food is probably the worst ruby i've had in East Anglia...”

“Had a fantastic meal at Merchants of Spice in Norwich. I ordered the lamb shank Rogan Josh, which was served in a bucket and was absolutely superb. The meat was incredibly tender and literally fell off the bone, packed with flavour and cooked to perfection. The rest of the table enjoyed a variety of different dishes, all of which were very well received, but the lamb shank was definitely the standout dish of the evening. Great food, friendly service and a lovely atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back.”
