About The Checkers (restaurant)
The Checkers is a fine dining restaurant with rooms on Broad St in Montgomery, set inside retained timber framing with low beams running through the rooms. The kitchen serves a tasting menu of multi-course small plates, with Welsh ingredients on the menu, so a meal here is paced as a full evening rather than a quick stop. Matched wine pairings come with the tasting menu, and non-alcoholic drink options sit alongside the alcoholic ones for guests who prefer them. Bedrooms upstairs let diners stay overnight on site after the meal. A lounge area with a log burner completes the layout.

Customer Review Summary
The tasting menu is what most reviewers come for, and several pair it with matched wines or a choice of non-alcoholic drinks. Diners single out the wagyu oxtail, the scallop tartare, a smoked eel and apple starter, the rabbit dish and the fish, while one says carrots became memorable. Another praises the herb risotto and panna cotta. Service is described as warm, friendly and unstuffy, and a couple of diners mention chatting with the chef or the owners. Several call the atmosphere cosy and relaxed, with a log burner, timber beams and art noted. The rooms get praise too, though one guest notes the low beams require ducking and another calls the bedroom quirky and the breakfast fine but nothing special. One reviewer cautions that plates look small, yet says nobody leaves hungry. Another notes fine dining is not suited to a quick meal. One diner was especially grateful when the team helped sort out a booking mix-up.

“A 6th star is needed for the Checkers. A wonderful meal served with grace and style. The multi-courses took us on a progression of flavours -always different, ever surprising and never over the top. We were especially grateful for the team helping us out when I messed up our booking :)”

“Highly recommend!! We came here for our anniversary dinner date and it was a delight. Each dish was incredible and melted in the mouth, worth every penny! The wagyu oxtail blew our minds and the scallop tartare was so indescribably good. The restaurant has a warm and cosy atmosphere. The staff were professional and friendly, the toilets were pristine, no issue finding parking and don't worry the plates look small but you won't leave hungry, you'll just be amazed as each dish comes out.”
