About Hill Top Farm Shop LE14 3JH

Hill Top Farm Shop LE14 3JH is a cafe in Melton Mowbray, on St Bartholomew's Way, set on a working farm where donkeys, alpacas and sheep live on site. The kitchen serves breakfast, brunch, lunch and afternoon tea, with a build-your-own breakfast and a Crofters breakfast on the morning side. Cakes sit alongside homemade lemon cheesecake and fruit scones. Orders are placed at the till, and staff call out order numbers when food is ready. The farm shop next door sells local produce, fresh vegetables and fruit, and fresh baked bread, and a plant area and flower shop sit beside it. Families can use the soft play and outdoor play area, which includes a small barn. Tables are spread across the indoor room, a conservatory and a decked area. The cafe is open daily, daytime only.

Customer Review Summary

Families dominate the praise, with reviewers repeatedly pointing to the fenced play areas and the donkeys, alpacas and sheep outside, though one notes the indoor play space would hold children for only about an hour. Breakfast comes close behind, from a Crofters breakfast to a build-your-own plate, and the cakes earn their own mentions, including a homemade lemon cheesecake and fruit scones taken away. Others describe generous, well presented salads that came out quickly, and the farm shop with fresh bread, local meat, plants and produce. Younger staff are called friendly and quick, and several describe the service as warm. The recurring complaint centres on the counter. One reviewer stood at the till for about three minutes without a greeting, another found an older team member rude and dismissive, and a third calls the till queue chaotic. Food complaints are specific too: eggs advertised as poached arrived soft boiled, a quiche slice hung off a side plate, and tea and coffee were lukewarm enough that one party left without finishing.

“Hilltop Farm was recommended to me by a friend, and purely because of that recommendation I drove around 35 minutes across Leicester to visit. We arrived on a Friday morning at about 8.15 am. The café had already been open for 15 minutes and there were a couple of customers inside, but unfortunately nobody greeted us. There was an older lady behind the counter making coffees and serving, but there was no acknowledgement at all. As first time visitors we had no idea whether we should wait to be seated or find a table ourselves, and nobody explained how it worked or where the menus were. We eventually found a menu ourselves. When I went to order, I stood at the till for around three minutes while the lady making coffees was right in front of me. She eventually said, “I’ll be with you in a moment,” but it was the lack of acknowledgement beforehand and the abrupt manner that really stood out. I appreciate that everyone has busy mornings, but when you work in hospitality a simple greeting and a smile make a huge difference. The younger members of staff, on the other hand, were friendly and attentive. The food was a little overrated. I ordered smashed avocado and eggs on toast with two extra sausages. The sausages were lovely, but the eggs were advertised as poached and were actually more like soft boiled, as you can see from the photo. For families, there are some positives. There is a soft play area and a small barn, although the indoor play facilities are quite limited and would probably only keep children entertained for about an hour. The outdoor play area is better, there is plenty of outdoor seating for nice weather, a lovely farm shop, good parking, and a couple of donkeys to see. Overall, I can see why families enjoy visiting, but the customer service in the café really let the experience down. A warm welcome costs nothing and would have made a big difference.”

“We pulled in on a sunny Sunday afternoon while out potting. The area was lovely, clean and attractive, especially the plant area and farm shop. But the service and attitude in the coffee shop was appalling. The older lady in the group was rude and dismissive and was to busy chatting to her colleague to serve us. A poor young member of the team who was busy saw us and served us. The food was mediocre at best, the slice of quiche was served on a side plate and it was hanging off the plate. Tea and coffee were luke warm at best. It was that poor we didn't finish it and left. It's very sad it the place as such potential. We will not be return.”
