About Mad Hatter

Mad Hatter is an Alice in Wonderland-themed tea room in Matlock, at 34 Crown Square, and it opens daily. Log cabin seating at the back looks over the river, giving the room a view to go with its Mad Hatter and Cheshire Cat decorations. Tea for 2 comes with sandwiches, and veggie sandwiches are part of the choice. The Mad Hatter Club Sandwich sits on the menu, and the "We're All Nuts Here" croffles take their name from one of the wall decorations. Breakfast dishes are served too, and a separate gluten free menu is available. Orders are paid for by card at the main counter.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often praise the log cabin and riverside seating out the back, where diners describe a magical lunch and a tea for two in the sun. Food draws repeated approval, including the Mad Hatter Club Sandwich, the Stew in a Yorkshire, eggs Benedict, crushed avocado with poached eggs, and the "We're All Nuts Here" croffles. Close behind, the tiramisu hot chocolates and the Cheshire Cat cocktail earn praise, and several call the staff welcoming, with one couple celebrating an anniversary having a server take photos of them outside. Reviewers also mention a small book corner for younger children. Service is the recurring complaint. One diner says no one took orders or noticed them for a long stretch, and another never received a drink despite asking twice. A coeliac diner reports finding a chip in the crisps of a "gluten free" tostie and being unable to eat it, though the server apologised. A few find the croffles overpriced. One reviewer adds that the chocolate-dipped glass rim ended up on their face.

“What an awful experience. NOT COELIAC disease SAFE! my partner and I heard seen good reviews and videos and decided we had to see what it was all about. But the moment we walkin in we noticed the staff were rude. 1 said hello then continued to learn on the front bar area talking to another staff member, we said sorry to interrupt but are we alright to sit outside the girl behind the bar said yeah off you go. We walked around and my partner found a table but standing on the other side was a staff member pointing at a table for us to sit at, and rolled there eyes when we got confused as we didn’t see anyone showing us to a table. We sat and I needed to tell the member of staff I had coeliac disease but she went before I had the chance. We stared at the menu unsure it would be Gluten safe. after waiting for someone to come to the table for 10 minutes as we couldn’t get anyone’s attention, we explained that 1 of us was coeliac and they went to get the separate menu as no one asked about allergies and intolerance’s before we sat . we ordered 2 drinks 1 meal from the regular menu, & 1 from the “gluten free” menu. And my partner asked to order his milkshake then for after the meal. The drinks came fairly quickly, and then a very long wait and the milkshake arrived (even tho we asked for it to be after the main food) but he had it anyways. Then the meals arrived after a long wait again, they looked good, the “Gluten FREE” meal I ate part of (tostie, crisps and salad). When eating I found a chip hidden within in the crisps, (the chips were not gluten free) I was unable to get any attention from staff member to inform them, During the meal no one came back to ask if everything was ok, No offer for extra drinks, was just left with no choice but to NOT eat the meal due to the clear cross contamination. After my partner had finished eating we sat waiting 30 minutes with the plates infront of us and empty glasses and was annoyed I couldn’t have my food. A girl came to take the plates no communication just took the plates and went. WHY CALL YOUR MENU GLUTEN FREE IF YOU CANNOT ACCOMMODATE IT. Finally, the server came back to the table and gave us the bill, we explained what had happened and he was very apologetic, we explained that we could see it was busy however it meant I couldn’t eat the meal, and no one would stop to help us when we tried. He explained that as a larger group came in that it was hard to keep up with orders but he would tell the kitchen to be more careful. (the larger group came in after we ordered our food)… £40 what a waste as I couldn’t even eat. To the server with the Longer blue hair, thank you for apologising! you listened clearly when you took my order and double checked you got it right👍🏼 it wasn’t your fault as you didn’t serve me the food yourself and you were rushed off your feet with no one else around helping you!”

“What a lovely quirky place ! I had the Cheshire Cat cocktail…. Was scrumptious! Can’t remember name of cocktail my daughter had but it had bananas in. The staff was so lovely. Not a big place but the outside area is so nice There’s a fairly big log cabin that’s amazing. It’s definitely got holiday vibes. Didn’t have food only two drinks each but the food looked lovely. I will eat if I visit again…. Which hopefully one day I will. Can’t recommend this place enough.”

“Had the tea for 2 this afternoon and had the best time sat in the sun next to the river! Our server was lovely and made sure my veggie friend got enough veggie sandwiches. Sam delivering it with a cheeky smile was the cherry on top ☺️ Cheers chefs and thanks to everyone working 🥰”

“Absolutely the best find in Matlock. We treat ourselves to breakfast here maybe once a month. The eggs Benedict is my husband’s favourite while I love the crushed avocado and poached eggs on toast….to die for. Their coffee is hard to beat and all served by the most polite and helpful staff. Special shout out to the lady with purple blue hair. They have the most adorable deco and also an outside garden overlooking the river. 5/5 from us and would definitely recommend a visit.”

“Went in with partner & family, first visit and I won't be back unfortunately. The place looks lovely, well decorated, food was great... But, it felt as if the staff couldn't be bothered to serve us. Didn't get a drink we ordered, even after asking again if it was coming and they knew we hadn't had it. Such a shame!”
