Quick info
About Cliffs Cafe
At 172 Northdown Rd in Margate, Cliffs Cafe is a coffee shop spread over two floors, with a record store on the second floor. The building also serves as an art cafe and a live music club, so records on sale share the space with the cafe and the music. The menu is built around egg, bacon and bread, and service is at the table only. Coffee arrives with milk requested at the table. Dogs are welcome, so a visit with a four-legged companion fits.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers describe a cafe changed under new ownership, with the old menu gone. Regulars miss the hash browns and sausages, find the egg, bacon and bread repetitive, and one was refused a brioche swap for French toast for a child who can't have egg. Table service is slow, with orders left untaken. A visitor praised the two floors of records and grilled bread and butter pudding.

“Northdown Road has tons of Vintage options and this Cafe is the jewel in the crown. I went on Saturday, Sunday and Monday on my first ever visit to Kent. 2 floors of records and good stock too supplied by Ghost Papa who has his own shop on the opposite side of tge road. From Brazilian coffee to beer. Grilled Bread & Butter pudding to Toasted Ciabatta this is a phenomenal experience particularly helped by friendly and engaging staff.”

“The place has changed under the new ownership, sadly. It being table service only the service is incredibly slow, and the new staff don't even acknowledge you waiting. The new workspace WiFi system is clunky. It logs you out when you lock your laptop, and then have to get a new code. There are never any sugars or waters upstairs. It's a shame - I am a local and frequented often but now not so much.”

“I often used to visit Cliffs for the amazing hash browns and other menu items, I absolutely loved the old menu. Today’s experience was well below what it used to be. The menu is hugely boring and all very similar, no more sausages, everything is pretty much egg, bacon, and bread. The bacon is still really tasty but not at all what I went there for and I left disappointed. In addition, whilst all the staff are lovely to speak to and always serve with a smile, we were left at a table without anyone coming to take our order, despite that other tables joining and being seated after us were served. Eventually I had to go to the counter to order. No water was put on the table, the tables were sticky, and we wasn’t given milk with our coffee until I had to go and ask. It left us feeling overall a little like we were singled out for poor service (although it was slow for everyone, we were the least well attended to). I always try to make excuses when somewhere I love goes downhill, especially when I take friends there and I’ve been raving about it to them. Today was just one of those days where I felt like I’d let others down by visiting what WAS my fave place for a breakfast. I don’t think I’ll be returning until I see that others are starting to have experiences closer to what I was used to. I wish the owners would listen to all the poor reviews about their new menu, as this is the biggest disappointment - whilst I can see they often respond to remarks around poor service. I can overlook a bit of less than satisfactory service if I get the good grub!”

“Service was terrible and place looked like it needed cleaning”

“Since changing ownership, this place has gone from 5 stars to one star. They have taken away their old favourites, and refuse to make any changes or additions to menu items. In our case, refusing to substitute French toast for brioche only for a child that can’t have egg. Just not what it was and we won’t ever come back after visiting year, after year for almost a decade.”
