About Hope & Anchor
On Upper St, Hope & Anchor is a pub with dark wood interiors and large arched windows upstairs, and a separate basement cellar bar downstairs where live bands play without sound bleeding into the main room. Cask ales sit alongside the house Hope & Anchor IPA, and the menu runs to 67 dishes, including Karaage Sticky Chicken, Baja Fish Tacos and Gochujang Pork Bao Buns. Biff's Jackfruit Wings and Korean BBQ Fried Halloumi round out the range. A juke box plays in the bar, and dogs are welcome throughout. The pub opens daily. The toilets carry a butcher-shop design, complete with loo roll on a chain.

Customer Review Summary
Live bands in the basement bar draw the most praise, with reviewers naming gigs by Shooting Galleries, Angel Storm 2, and The Cabaret, and noting the downstairs venue stays small and intimate without bleeding into the main bar. Close behind, the staff are repeatedly called friendly, helpful, and professional, and the house Hope & Anchor IPA and general beer selection get singled out alongside a jukebox. A few mention the toilets' unusual butcher-shop decor as a quirky talking point rather than a flaw. One visitor found no kitchen open on the night they came and planned to return for food, and one reviewer, who says they normally only post positive feedback, describes a strongly negative experience during a visit for drinks, though no specific detail beyond that is given. Multiple reviewers say they'd recommend it, especially for catching a band or a casual pint with friends.

“Best time ever I have in this pub when I go out with friends for a gig, or even for a beer. Weekdays or weekends, the staff is really nice & professional. I totally recommend, it's a star pub in Islington.”

“I have never left a bad review as I don’t like the nature of people only leaving reviews after bad experiences, so I only ever provide feedback if it is positive, but I have NEVER had such a negative experience. We came in for a few drinks …”

“Came here after the arsenal parade for a pint and to use the facilities. Staff were very friendly and even complimented my cap. Drink choices were plentiful and averagely priced for the area. …”

“Went to watch the Shooting Galleries band 12th April and loved it. My first time at the Hope & Anchor and happy to say the experience was lovely. Friendly, patient, and helpful staff as well as a clean environment which was airy as well as keeping it cosy. Unfortunately they had no kitchen that day but I will be back to try the food.”
