About Thai Orchid Restaurant
Thai Orchid Restaurant is a family-run Thai restaurant in Lockerbie, set inside a countryside pub in Dalton, Scotland. The family has run it for 30 years, and the kitchen cooks traditional Thai dishes. Starters include Thai fishcake, and the mains include Thai green curry. Banana fritters are one of the desserts. Gluten-free dishes are available for coeliacs, so guests who avoid gluten can still find something to order. The restaurant is a sit-down dining room within the pub.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often praise the curries and stir fries, naming massaman curry, Thai green curry, drunken noodles, salt and chilli chicken, tom yum soup and pad kee mao. Close behind, several describe friendly, chatty staff, including one who returned for a takeaway and found the same welcome. A few also like the outdoor area and the renovated interior, though another calls the decor dated and says the dessert choices of chocolate cake, banana fritters and ice cream are not very Thai. The main complaint is inconsistent service and starters. One reviewer describes orders served in no particular order, part orders arriving later and a flat, shiny Thai fishcake left uneaten, while another sent back cold aromatic duck and found the Singapore noodles like curry on a plate. A booking was also not recorded, and one visitor who relied on an online check found the restaurant closed and went hungry, concluding to phone before going. Even the unhappy mixed review called the mains the best they had tasted.

“Just had our first meal here and we splurged. Everything we had to eat was delicious. *Note* Every we ordered apart from the pad kee mao was ordered gluten-free for a coeliac. The tom yum soup was fantastic, light and packed with flavour. The pad kee mao was delicious, the combination of ingredients was great and felt incredibly balanced. The green curry was light, beautifully spiced and paired amazingly well with the coconut rice, giving sweet yet creamy combination. The fresh chicken stir fry was it was overall winner and well worth it. Overall, the whole meal was great, and it's genuinely worth it. We will be returning in the future.”

“While visiting Scotland, some friends took us to The Thai Orchid. We didn't know what to expect but oh were we pleasantly surprised. It was really good. We also met both of the owners. The food was delicious and the staff was very nice. They made a couple of traveling Texans feel very welcome. We would definitely go back again!”

“Had a bad experience here booked a table but wasn’t booked in by member of staff luckily we got a table but to be quite honest I wish they hadn’t. Service was bad from the start got food menus but no drinks menus and was asked what we wanted had to to say what have you got as we don’t have drinks menus then water took ages coming back. Then we waited ages for our food order to be taken. Starters were good but the we order the Aromatic duck which the first time around was bloody awful hard duck that tasted and look like yesterdays a spoon on on the plate presentation was awful to chopped up cucumber huge slices of red onion carrots and everything was cold so sent back. Second plate still the same veg so you couldn’t roll up so awkward that it totally put me of eating it so. Partner Singapore noodle was just curry on a plate. Would not recommend”

“Our first visit although we are locals. Like most places in Southern Scotland it's a bit of a drive, unless you live in the village. It has a reputation for good food but unreliable opening times. I thought an online check would work and was wrong 🙃. The guy who answered the door was polite but we went hungry. Lesson learned, phone before you go. Might have another try, who knows.”

“I've never been to such a mixed place, the service was almost none existent people were being served in no particular order, people before us got their food at the same time as us but several people who came in after us got served before us all, but not all the food ordered was served to the correct people, part orders were served up and the remainder served 10 minutes later once the chef had re-cooked whatever was missing. The waitress apologised and said she'd got all the orders mixed up, maybe this was because there was a power cut as we arrived so orders were being taken by hand on paper. Next the food, my partner had the Thai fishcake starter which was inedible and looked like a re-constituted sausage patti, very flat and thin and shiny. It also tasted disgusting, he left it. My vegetable spring rolls were just average. However, our main courses were the best we've tasted. I had massaman curry which was perfect and my partner had Thai Green Curry which, although too spicey hot for me, was perfect for him. The place was busy and the bar was buzzing. If we went again I'd just have the main course.”
