About G-Wu
G-Wu is a Chinese takeaway at 856 Leeds Rd in Leeds, run by its original owners after a move to Bramhope. This is their only location. The kitchen offers a full gluten-free menu, with the food packed in labelled tubs so gluten-free orders are easy to tell apart. Among the dishes are Cantonese style sweet and sour chicken, char sui BBQ pork and shredded beef in chilli and garlic. Beer and wine are part of the range. Though the business centres on takeaway, it also has a small dining room with about seven tables, set close together.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often come for the full gluten free menu, with a coeliac diner noting that every tub was labelled, and several say the food justified a drive of around twenty minutes. Char sui BBQ pork draws the strongest praise, with shredded beef in chilli and garlic, Cantonese style sweet and sour chicken, duck, seaweed and king prawn dishes close behind. Diners describe the cooking as fresh, light and well seasoned, unlike gloopy syrupy takeaway dishes, and say it arrives quickly. Friendly staff and a chef who accommodated fussy requests also come up. The small room has only a handful of tables, which left one couple almost elbow to elbow with neighbours and feeling nudged to free the table. A couple of reviewers note how busy the takeaway side gets, and one suggests booking ahead for a table. One takeaway customer received a chicken curry full of mushrooms instead of char sui curry with onion, and found the spare ribs bland and the chips dry. Another was charged for a drink they never had, which was easily sorted.

“Just had a fantastic meal for 4 at G-Wu. The food was gorgeous and the service from Charlie was excellent too! The takeaway side of things seemed to be really busy, so I'd imagine ringing your order in and calling to collect is probably a good bet. We ordered 4 starters, mains, 2 rpunds of drinks, plus extras and it worked out at roughly £35 each including a tip. Really worth it! Book in advance to guarantee a table, we did and I'm glad. I'd highly recommend. 😄😄”

“Got a takeaway from this place on a recommendation from a family member and was very disappointed. Firstly it was very busy and collection was going to be an hour, I thought it was OK, they must be good if they are so busy. Collected the order and got home, I'd ordered a char sui curry with just onion but recieved a chicken curry which was full of mushrooms! By the time we realised we didn't want to waste time going back. I had peking spare ribs which were bland and not much meat on them, the curry was very plain with no kick to it, the chips were so dry, like they'd been warmed up, they were almost inedible. The fried rice was OK but for the price point I really expected more. Maybe because they were so busy but unsure we will try again.”

“Lovely little place with delicious food, but just a little too small and cosy for our liking. If you're looking for a quiet, intimate date night, this probably isn't the place for you. G-Wu's biggest challenge is its size. With only seven tables and around fourteen seats, we found ourselves sitting almost elbow to elbow with other diners, close enough to hear each other's conversations. Fortunately, when a window table became available, the staff were more than happy to move us, which we really appreciated. Whenever my partner and I go out for a meal, we usually choose an Indian restaurant because it's the easy option. This time we decided to be a bit more adventurous, and we're so glad we did. The food arrived very quickly, which initially made us wonder if quality might have been sacrificed, but we couldn't have been more wrong. Everything was fresh, full of flavour, and some of the best food we've had in a long time. I don't remember seeing any desserts on the menu, and once we'd finished our meal we did feel subtly encouraged to free up the table. Given how small the restaurant is, that's understandable, as they need to keep tables turning. My only real gripe came when it was time to pay. The first screen on the card machine was the tipping prompt. Personally, I'm not a fan of being asked for a tip before I've even completed the payment. If I want to leave a tip, I absolutely will, but I'd rather it felt like my choice than something I'm being nudged into. Also as always, check your bill throughly as we were charged for a drink not taken but again easily sorted. Those small niggles aside, the food and friendly service more than made up for them. We'd definitely visit again and would happily recommend G-Wu to anyone looking for fantastic food in a cosy setting.”

“This chinese restaurant is completely different to all the others and worth a drive out for. The quality is fantastic, everything is fresh and light, not like the usual gloopy syrupy dishes where everything tasted the same. The fillet steak was fantastic, and we are fussy annoying customers that always want things a bit differently and the chef (I think owner) came out and was so polite and accomodating. The Char Sui BBQ pork was the best thing ever, it was all fantastic. I will be telling all my clients! Thank you guys. X”

“I went for a sit down meal and was in awe of how stylish and well decorated the small place was. Not like the average Chinese takeaway or restaurant. The food tasted amazing. I had a sweet and sour chicken and all the ingredients was full of flavour and fresh. 10/10 I will be going again”
