Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the chocolate and salted caramel cake, described as fresh, rich, moist and full of flavour without being overly sweet. A classic fruit scone with clotted cream and jam and an Earl Grey tea also earns praise, though another diner found the scone extremely dry. Several describe a calm, relaxing, spacious room with friendly, welcoming staff. Drinks draw mixed reactions: a matcha latte was decent, while one reviewer could not get past a sip of coffee, which came in a cup whose sizing was off and was flooded with milk. Complaints about food and service carry real weight. One reviewer describes a tandoori chicken bacon Caesar wrap missing its dressing and bacon and filled with cubes of bread, another a cold sausage roll straight from the fridge, and two call staff rude or lacking manners. One diner reports grit in every bite of the Eggs Florentine, which they attributed to unwashed spinach, and says staff ignored their table when they raised it.

“I'm afraid to say many things need improvement at that Cafe. I didn’t enjoy my breakfast at Mason+Rye; the staff members are unprofessional and rude, and they don't know how to serve the food. I paid £5 for a cold sausage roll, straight from the fridge.”

“Classic fruit scone with clotted cream and strawberry jam, with an Earl Grey Tea with a spot of milk on the side... lovely!”

“Purchased a tandoori chicken bacon Caesar wrap to take away. There didn’t appear to be any dressing/sauce or bacon included and it had lots of added cubes of bread!! Attached is a photo of the bread that was inside one half of the wrap! If I’d eaten it in there l, I would have taken it back to the counter!”

“I really enjoy visiting Mason & Rye at Bentalls/Fenwick. The food is excellent — filling, great quality, and very good value for money. It’s a lovely place to take a break while shopping, and the atmosphere is calm and relaxing despite being located next to a busy furniture department. The staff are generally attentive and welcoming, and the service adds to the overall experience. One small area for improvement is that occasionally some interactions can feel a little too familiar, even when there hasn’t been much previous interaction with a customer. Friendly service is appreciated, but maintaining a balance and allowing customers to enjoy their meal and their own space is equally important. Overall, Mason & Rye offers great food, a pleasant atmosphere, and a nice escape from the busier parts of the store. The quality of the food and the relaxed environment are definitely the highlights, and I would happily return.”

“Absolutely loved this cake shop! I had the chocolate salted caramel cake and it was incredible – perfectly moist, rich, and full of flavour without being overly sweet. You can really taste the quality. Also, mentioning the service from Gina, Veronika and Helen were all super friendly, welcoming and genuinely lovely.”
