About The Old Store

The Old Store is a bakery and coffee shop in Kings Lynn, at 5 Pedlars Mews, serving breakfast and brunch on its own house-made sourdough bread. The kitchen bakes cinnamon buns, almond croissants and cruffins in-house, and the menu also lists a full English breakfast alongside vegetarian and vegan options. Coffee is locally sourced, and cocktails, juices and smoothies sit alongside the food. A counter area sells loaves, cakes and coffees for people who want to carry something out. Dogs are welcome inside, so owners can bring them along. The business has other branches, including Fring and Snettisham, and each venue runs its own menu. Parking is limited to a handful of spaces out front.

Customer Review Summary

The recurring complaint is noise. Some reviewers say the busy room made conversation hard, and one believes it led to a mixed-up drinks order, which staff corrected at once with an apology. One notes the tables are quite close together, and others mention limited, tricky parking. One lower rating objected to staff letting diners feed a dog from their plate, while another visitor liked the many dogs and happy owners. A few say the full English costs more than most, and one describes a second visit within days.

“The best cinnamon buns in the land! Also their Almond croissants are just delicious and a new fav. We called in on our way back from a North Norfolk break, for a coffee and bun-late breakfast. Highly recommend. I bought three more buns to take to family at home. We had take-away coffee and almond croissants from the Fring branch yesterday and sat in at the Snettisham branch on the way home today. Coffee really good. Service was excellent with friendly staff. A few little cute bits and bobs for sale. Picked up some local honey. It was busy but it felt relaxed with many dogs and happy owners...and not surprising with baked goods this good! Tricky to park but SO worth it!”

“This is a brilliant place to eat; having been here a few times, it has never disappointed. Having eaten in and taken away, I would highly recommend visiting this eatery. The hot chocolate and coffee are amazing! The food is great and made to a high standard. I also took away some delicious pastries! All the staff were incredibly nice and welcoming; thank you so much!”

“We visited The Old Store on a busy Saturday morning after hearing lots of great things about it, and overall we had a really lovely experience. It’s clearly a very popular local spot for breakfast and brunch, so I’d definitely recommend arriving early if you can. One thing worth noting for anyone visiting is that parking is quite limited. There are only a handful of spaces out front, but we appreciated that we were able to be seated very quickly. We were sat in the front window area. There was a great variety of breakfast, brunch and lighter bite options, with plenty of vegetarian and vegan choices as well which was appreciated. I had the truffled mushrooms on sourdough with poached eggs added, which was delicious. You could really tell the ingredients were good quality and locally sourced - the eggs in particular were excellent. The food arrived quickly, was beautifully presented, and everything tasted fresh and well thought out. The staff were all friendly, welcoming and helpful throughout. Our drinks order was initially mixed up due to a misunderstanding in the noise of the café, but it was corrected immediately and very politely, with genuine apologies from the team. There was also a lovely takeaway counter area with breads, cakes and coffees, which seemed especially popular with cyclists and people popping in for takeaway treats. We ended up taking a couple of cakes home with us too. My only real criticism - and the reason for 4 rather than 5 stars - was the noise level inside. I completely understand that busy cafés naturally have a lively atmosphere, and it’s obviously part of what makes this place so popular. However, there’s a difference between a nice buzz and struggling to hold a conversation with the person sitting directly next to you. Even once the café became less busy, we still found it quite difficult to hear each other, and I suspect it also contributed to the confusion with our order. Perhaps something as simple as staff repeating orders back at the table could help avoid misunderstandings when it’s particularly busy. That said, we really enjoyed our visit overall. The food was excellent, the team were lovely, and it’s easy to see why so many people recommend it. We’d definitely return in the future.”

“Lovely breakfast today. My favourite poached eggs on sourdough with hash browns. Bit noisey cause busy but food more than made up for it.”

“Loved visiting The Old Store’s latest venue at Fring today! So peaceful and pretty, friendly staff and just love the fact that all 3 of their venues have different menus! Food and drinks were fabulous, can’t wait to return! Also a shoutout for the products and bakery on site.”
