Quick info
About Barua Street Food
Barua Street Food is an Indian restaurant in Keswick, at 26 Lake Rd, built around a street food menu of small-plate starters and mains. Dahi puri and the masala dosa sit among the dishes, and the onion bhaji arrives as one or two very large bhajis meant for sharing. Breads such as naan and paratha are ordered separately, so tables can build the meal around the mains they choose. Gluten-free options are available. A private dining room gives groups a space of their own, and dogs are welcome inside, which suits diners who bring a pet along.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the butter chicken, with the masala dosa, onion bhaji and dahi puri close behind. One describes the bhaji as huge and crisp, and several say portions are generous. The main complaint is value: one finds the curries pricey for street food portions and the keema bland. Several suggest booking ahead, and one paratha was taken off a bill.

“First (and second) time at Barua, and we'll definitely be heading back there next time we're in the neighbourhood! Lively and popular, booking ahead is highly recommended. On our first visit, neither of us were particularly hungry, and my wife was feeling a little queasy after a dodgy lunch. However, our knowledge and attentive waitress helped us through the menu to make sure we chose well. On our second visit we went solo and didn't chose quiteso well but still, what a feast! Our choices over two visits were: Dahi puri - these little mouthfuls of heaven arrived fridge-cold, but after giving them 5 mins to lose the chill, the flavour burst out - highly recommended. Aloo chat - these potatoes were, what we can only describe as, 'candied' and a bit tough. Alright if you like sweetness in your starter, but not for us. Mandala dosa - OMG this was good! Light and full of flavour, the heat moderated by a coconut paste on the side. Tarka dhal - very tasty and not at all greasy, every last drop mopped up with a nann bread ordered separately. Chickpea chole - full of heat and flavour, the gravy was amazing. We ordered a paratha to go with it, and the chapatti-sized bit of chewiness that arrived was the only disappointment (this was knocked off the bill, with the explanation that they had recently changed supplier). Onion bhagi - last, but no means least was this monster bhaji. The size of a head of cauliflower, tasty, crisp and not at all greasy. More than enough for two to share and with a firey red chilli paste on the side. This dish on it's own is enough reason for a return visit.”

“We visited Barua Street food in Keswick for a birthday celebration and booked two weeks in advance. We were seated at a table for two and enjoying the food( which was mediocre )on the menu but midway through our meal a party for two with wet smelling dogs were seated closely next to us and the odor was overwhelming and made it difficult for us to enjoy our experience. One dog also continually sat on my partners feet making it uncomfortable. We also noticed staff petting the dogs then immediately serving food without washing their hands. We weren't given a courtesy check at our table so were unable to voice our concerns discreetly. We went to pay and I raised our dissatisfaction and were offered a reduction in our bill with an apology. While we understand this venue is dog friendly maybe consideration should be given to providing separate dining areas to ensure it's inclusive for both animals and people.”

“Brilliant place! Caters for gluten free food, staff are very knowledgeable and extremely accommodating. They allow dogs in too, and the staff are just lovely! Food is excellent too, recommend the butter chicken, Lamb Keema and the Fish dish”
