Customer Review Summary
Homemade pie is the dish reviewers raise most, a steak and mushroom pie with puffed, layered pastry and gravy of perfect consistency, while another diner gives special mention to the beef, mushroom and ale pie. Chips come close behind, chunky and fluffy in one account and crunchy outside and soft inside in another. Others name the salmon, cooked perfectly, a lamb shank one diner rated the best he has ever had, mushroom stroganoff, haggis balls, prawns, and fish and chips. Reviewers repeatedly describe the staff as friendly and the service as fast and efficient, and several call the prices reasonable. The beer is described as cold, and pool, darts and dominoes get a mention. The one mixed note comes from a reviewer who says the pub looks outdated and the food may not be the best, though the service and atmosphere still made them feel at home. Another points out that dinner service finishes early on Sunday. One visitor was too full to finish the huge pie or order pudding, then stayed a couple of hours for a game of pool.

“Great little pub. Nice atmosphere and a choice of games like pool, darts and dominoes. £5 cider is always nice too!”

“Had a really nice steak and mushroom pie. The chips where chunky and fluffy. The veg was fresh and still had a bite to it. The pastry was puffed and layered. The gravey was perfect consistency. I would go back just for the steak pie. I didn't order dessert because I was too full, but they had a good selection. The price was around £13. Which these days was actually a good price. We had a lager shandy which was cold and fizzy. The staff where friendly and the service was fast. The toilets were clean. They also had a beer garden.”

“On our way to Edinburgh, we stopped at The Carters Rest for early dinner. The best decision we could have made. Excellent food at reasonable prices and with a very warm and efficient service. Everything we tasted was delicious, special mention to the beef steak, mushroom and ale pie and the fish and ships. A pity in our way back to Newcastle it was too early to stop by for a nice lunch.”

“What can I say..... we had travelled across to Jedburgh and wandered around, when we found this place and decided to stop in for a drink and something to eat. The service was fantastic, the staff were welcoming and so friendly, nothing was too much bother, it was a very relaxing atmosphere. The food was excellent, the salad was crisp and fresh, the pie was homemade and huge haha, we didn't manage to finish the plate, and had no room for a pudding, but decided to stay on for a couple of hours and have a game of pool. I would definitely recommend trying this place if you are ever visiting Jedburgh.”
