About Nu Bar

Nu Bar is a bar and grill on Kingston Road in Hull, working through a menu of around 20 dishes. Sea bass anchors that list, served either on its own or folded into a seabass risotto, and the kitchen also turns out plates like Chicken Kiev alongside its risotto options. Tables are taken on a walk-in basis rather than by reservation, and the room gets very busy on weekend nights. The doors open daily, so the same food and bar service run through the week.

Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often return to the sea bass, called exceptional by one diner who switched to it after a favourite left the menu, and a seabass risotto and chicken Kiev are praised as marvellous on a busy Saturday night out. Several describe friendly, quick staff, plenty of people on the bar so nobody waited, and food that arrived hot and together after pre-ordering. A long-time regular says the welcome stays warm year after year, and one suggests reserving a table for busy nights. Close behind, the meat pie with chips and gravy is called very good. The criticism is real and split across the reviews. One reviewer says the carrots were barely cooked on both plates and that staff offered no apology when told. A family says a shift supervisor told them other guests had complained about their baby's normal noises, leaving them embarrassed and unwilling to return. Another reports a disappointing scrambled egg on toast, and one finds the food and drinks a bit expensive for what arrived. The most telling detail is the pie diner's note that a simple sorry would have kept the review from being written.

“The Meat pie was very good, as was the chips and gravy, But the carrots was raw, hardly cooked on both mine and my wife's meal, so we left them. When the plates was collected, I polity told the member of staff that the pie was brilliant, but the carrots was just about raw. Her reply was nothing, did not apologise or say anything ?? A sorry or I will tell the chef would have prevented me from posting this review.”

“Amazing night, food was excellent, hot and service great. Having pre ordering our food, it all came at the same time. Staff were curteous and attentative. Plenty of bar staff, we wasn't waiting at the bar. We had a fantastic night. Thank you to everyone who made my night special”

“I’m really disappointed with our experience here. We visited tonight with our baby, who was not crying or distressed — he was simply making normal baby noises and “finding his voice,” as babies do. He wasn’t screaming in a disruptive way, just vocalising happily. To our surprise, the shift supervisor came over to inform us that they had received complaints. Instead of approaching the situation with understanding or even checking in kindly, it felt like we were being made to feel unwelcome for having a baby with us. We completely understand being mindful of other guests, and of course if our child had been genuinely crying or causing a disturbance, we would have stepped outside. But this was normal baby behavior in what is supposed to be a family-friendly public restaurant. The way it was handled left us feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable. Families should feel welcome, not singled out for age-appropriate behavior. Unfortunately, because of this experience, we won’t be returning. I would also recommend taking the short walk across the road and heading to Hop pole were they offer a much more family friendly experience.”

“We came to Nu Bar tonight as a family of 7 for my dads birthday. We regularly go to Nu bar as we live round the corner and have always been happy with the food/service. …”
