Quick info
About The Moorings
The Moorings is a family-run seafood restaurant on High St on the North Norfolk coast, serving a modern British menu. The a la carte list follows the season, so dishes change with the local produce and locally sourced fish available. Fish leads the cooking, with sea bass served alongside ratatouille and saffron fumet, and halibut paired with clams and grapefruit beurre monté. Soup appears among the starters. Every pudding is homemade by Angela, and a wine list runs alongside the food. The dining room is small, and families and larger groups dine here, with tables of seven and ten among them. The quayside is a short walk away.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often single out the fish, with sea bass and halibut named repeatedly, alongside hake and monkfish in a creamy sauce, all described as cooked perfectly. Desserts come close behind, including the raspberry brulee tart, sticky toffee pudding, ginger pudding and cardamom panna cotta. The wine list draws steady praise for its modern choices, and a Gigondas red is named as a highlight. Diners describe friendly, relaxed service and a busy dining room, with several noting a seasonal menu that changes with local produce. The caveats are specific. One diner found the fish soup bland and the porchetta skin too tough, another at a table of seven found only one vegetarian main, a small cabbage portion and stingy shared sides, and a honeymoon visit was marred by gruff seating and noisy children. Some also mention the value as modest or good. One reviewer who gave a low score was offered a full refund by the owner afterward.

“We love The Moorings! We visit every summer! The food is right out of the top drawer, atmosphere is freindly and cosy and the team work their socks off to look after the guests. This visit we enjoyed the new additions to the menu and the halibut was exceptional. Keep up the good work!”

“I live in Norwich and eat out a lot locally, plus I used to live near Blakeney, so I know the North Norfolk food scene well too, and this is one of the best meals I’ve had anywhere in the county. Went with a group of ten and the whole table was blown away. Service was attentive and clearly very well trained throughout. I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect steak for years, and this was the best I’ve had in Norfolk, perfectly caramelized outside, perfectly cooked in the middle, with a brilliant peppercorn sauce and delicious dauphinoise potatoes on the side. Starters and desserts were excellent too. I’ll admit I get a bit overzealous and passionate when it comes to a good steak, but this one had me so overjoyed I actually went into the kitchen to congratulate the chefs myself. The wine list also deserves a mention. It was so refreshing to see wines that had clearly been chosen with real care, not the obvious, classical choices you often find in North Norfolk, but more modern picks that were really well suited to the dishes on the menu. Forward thinking in a way you don’t often see round here. What really stood out was how unpretentious it all was. Nothing felt like it was trying too hard or putting on airs, just honest, simple flavors with attention to detail that was second to none. And genuinely very good value for money. It’s a 90 minute round trip for me. I’ll happily do it again, and I’m genuinely excited to see how the restaurant evolves in the years to come.”

“The food was fresh and beautiful presented .I especially enjoyed the fish ,which was cooked perfectly, and the soup was full of flavour. The service was friendly and attentive, and the atmosphere was warm and relaxing. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and I will happily return next time I'm in the area.”

“Very disappointing after a much better previous visit last summer. We booked several weeks in advance to be sure of a table. Only one of the three waitresses seemed to have any idea of service (sadly she was waiting other tables). On arrival, I was ignored on the door by one of them multiple times, only to be eventually noticed by another more senior member of staff who was pretty gruff about seating options and seated me with barely any attempt at friendliness or giving a sense of welcome. It happened to be our honeymoon but given the frostiness, frankly I didn't think it would make any difference mentioning. A table of four adults were ignoring their extremely disruptive young children (v noisy and at one point hitting each other), which ruined the atmosphere in such a small venue and you'd have thought the staff would have said something. Eventually another diner did say something upon leaving, to which one parent patheticly tried to deny there was any issue. The food was decent but not worth it when the atmosphere and service were so weak. Clearly something happened since last year when the food was more adventurous and markedly better, plus the service was much more attentive and genuine. The only thing I would rate highly was the wine, but I don't expect to go back. Recommend avoiding, there are better options in the town or nearby. EDIT: the owner subsequently contacted me and offered a full refund which seemed very decent of her.”

“This place was recommended by a friend for the next time I visited Norfolk and it was an absolutely stunning dining experience. Seasonal menu with beautiful fresh ingredients, the wine was superb, and the staff were extremely helpful from start to finish. Particular highlights for me were the sea bass and the Gigondas red wine. Can’t wait to visit again on my next trip to the coast.”
