Quick info
About Bouchon Bistrot
On Gilesgate in Hexham, Bouchon Bistrot serves French country cooking from a stone-clad dining room, with a simple set-price menu at lunch and a fuller card in the evening. The cassoulet appears with haricot beans and pieces of meat in a broth-like sauce, and chicken is offered as a main course, including a chicken ballotine. The restaurant takes walk-ins rather than reservations. A service charge is added to the bill on top of the menu prices.

Customer Review Summary
Diners most often return to praise dishes cooked "to perfection," from a duck that "melted off the bone" to a beautifully cooked onglet in an onion sauce, alongside starters like escargots and a chocolate fondant dessert singled out as beautiful. Several describe the setting as spotlessly clean with a view of the Abbey, and service across young and senior staff is repeatedly called good, making it a recurring choice for birthday lunches. A few note the room can feel noisy or cool with tables placed close together, and one visitor found it lacked atmosphere and found the chicken oddly flavored. Two separate reviewers report a serious exception: their cassoulet arrived watery and barely seasoned with undercooked meat, and after complaining they were still charged for both dishes and had to insist on removing the service charge before it was dropped.

“This bistro is absolutely wonderful, staff, quality of food, presentation, atmosphere, our experience could not have been better. For our starters we chose escargots which were delicious. Mains....chicken ballotine for my husband & for me the braised rabbit, again delicious. Dessert for my husband was tarte tatin, it was tasty, just a little soggy. I chose a calvados coffee......it was brilliant. Such a lovely menu & we cannot wait to return & try more of the wonderful food this restaurant has to offer.”

“First time here. Heard loads of really good reviews , let’s start with restaurant It’s in the French type style but has no soul , it’s got no atmosphere, that’s just my opinion , I don’t know how that could be rectified Food - starter soufflé was beautiful Main- chicken , it had a weird taste , not sure what it was , but I didn’t like it , again just my opinion , it tasted odd Desert - chocolate fondant beautiful Staff - the head waiter I suppose ( I think he was French) made us laugh , he was very direct in his approach ( felt a bit like we should sit up straight and salute) he wasn’t awful, just a bit different to other places I’ve been , not a lot of chat etc All in all I would say a 7/10 , again just my opinion , it’s been there 19 years so doing something right I’ve been , I’ve eaten but wouldn’t go back I don’t think - sorry But please try it for yourself , it may have just been us 3 , I think the lack of ambiance, atmosphere didn’t help , it’s just very flat While I remember , the cheese board was a bit lacking”

“Also posted to Trip Adviser. I will not repeat verbatim what my wife commented on 18/07, immediately after our trip to Bouchon. However, I do want to reshare the photos which she shared and provide my own comment. Caroline wanted to treat me on my birthday here, which I was very much looking forward to. Whilst the starters were fine, the cassoulet was inedible. It tasted like watery soup with barely cooked haricot beans and uncooked full British meat added in – whether this was the case or not, this was how it was presented and tasted. It tasted barely seasoned and, despite what you say about native south west French cuisine, this was completely unlike any cassoulet we had ever had in any French restaurant we have been to, either side of the Channel. What you say about us not providing full feedback at the restaurant is not correct – we did. We explained the above issues clearly and politely. Also, as my wife states, immediate removal of the service charge was not offered; we had to insist on this, and no alternative dish was offered. A restaurant’s service is its own business. However, I believe it is very poor business practice not to offer some kind of bill remission in a situation like this, and it is certainly not pleasant for you to respond to customers’ comments in a sarcastic and unpleasant manner. We will not return to your restaurant as a result of these experiences and, in future, I encourage you to seriously consider customers’ honest and polite negative feedback. I look forward to hearing your response and, if you do respond, I would very much appreciate it if you avoid the unpleasant and sarcastic manner adopted in your response to my wife. Aside from being unkind, others can see this and, frankly, it is embarrassing for you as a business. So if that remains your unfortunate attitude, please do not bother.”

“The starters were perfectly fine, but everything went downhill from there. We had travelled to Hexham for the day for my husbands birthday and were looking forward to having a meal here. My husband and I ordered the cassoulet, and it was completely inedible — nothing like any cassoulet I’ve ever seen. Despite complaining and clearly explaining the problem, the restaurant still charged us for both dishes, which was a disgrace. After such a terrible main course, we finished our drinks quickly and left without ordering dessert because the experience had already been ruined. I then had to insist the service charge be removed and justify my dissatisfaction yet again. Very poor food, very poor service, and shockingly overpriced. Edit: Thank you for your response. But just to confirm, both myself and husband didn’t like the main, the photos speak for themselves - it isn’t like any cassoulet I’ve ever seen. And also, on the day I clearly explained in more detail what was wrong with the dishes. I explained it was tasteless, and the meat should have been cut up finely. Instead they were just massive pieces of meat served I a dish of water and it didn’t taste French at all. To be charged for not one, but 2 of these dishes that neither of us ate is still quite frankly, appalling. And I’m more than happy to have left the reviews on multiple platforms. Also FYI, the fries were undercooked.”
