About Porthmellin Cafe
Window tables at Porthmellin Cafe look out over the harbour and cove, and the carpeted room behind them has kept its older character. This family run tea house on Mullion in Helston works from a menu of around 69 dishes, with cream tea served alongside fresh homemade scones, jam and clotted cream, and crab sandwiches ordered regularly. Pasties, breakfasts and sandwiches fill out the rest of the kitchen's range, and gluten-free cakes are on hand for anyone who needs them. Waiting staff take orders at the table, and seating is walk-in rather than booked ahead. The cafe opens daily. Dogs are welcome, and treats are kept for them.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often come for the cream tea, praising huge, fresh homemade scones, fruit-filled jams, plenty of clotted cream, and one reviewer's pick for the best raspberry jam. Close behind are the crab sandwiches, called good and very nice, along with a BLT served with potato salad, pasties one visitor rated the best of their Cornwall trip, and gluten-free cakes. Staff are repeatedly called lovely, and several mention the harbour view and a quirky, quaint room that feels frozen in time. The cafe is also described as dog friendly, with treats provided. The caveats are few but specific. One reviewer says the cafe could do with a good clean and questions the carpet, and felt the waitress was annoyed at them ordering. Another says negative comments about customers in the kitchen carried clearly into the dining area, and left without an enjoyable meal despite good crab sandwiches. Even so, the praise for the scones and the welcome from staff, including one who made a visiting daughter feel special, runs through most reviews.

“Oh wow! We had a gorgeous cream tea which was brilliant value, the staff were absolutely lovely, the cafe was really quirky and the views from the window were spectacular! We had food envy every time someone's food arrived! 😍 …”

“A bit fawlty towers and could do with a good clean perhaps. Not sure carpet is the most hygienic in a cafe? Cream tea was nice. But the service wasn’t anything to shout out about, felt like the waitress was annoyed at us even ordering.”

“Quaint little cafe. Went there for their famous cream tea. Amazing service. Best raspberry jam and scone. The cafe itself looks frozen in time. Lovely people. They also serve amazing breakfast and sandwiches.”

“We recently visited this cafe....to cut a long story short, we ultimately did not have an enjoyable meal. Just a friendly word of advice to the owner. When making negative comments about your customers in the kitchen, every word can be heard in the dinning area. Our crab sandwiches were good and dogs are welcome here.”

“The food here is delicious, the staff are friendly and provide excellent service. It's dog-friendly, the atmosphere inside is great, and the view outside is beautiful.”
