About The Watermill

The Watermill sits on The Watermill in Hayle, a pub, bar and restaurant set in its own small, hard-to-park car park. The kitchen runs a classic pub menu that covers pie and chips, fish and chips with fries, a bacon burger in a bun, and onion rings on the side, with kids' fish goujons and chips for younger eaters. Sunday brings a roast plated with roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, a Yorkshire pudding and a swede portion, the beef offered rare. Sticky toffee pudding with ice cream closes the meal. The bar pours a local ale and a local gin, and dogs are welcome inside. A deposit is taken toward the bill and is applied to the final bill, with payment settled on the day.

Customer Review Summary

Reviews split sharply: a few diners call the Sunday roast and meals delicious and well presented, while most describe disappointing food, from burnt pies and rock-solid nachos to overcooked, bland roasts with wilted veg and greasy burgers. Service gets mixed feedback, with one manager stepping in to remove a charge.

“Great traditional pub with historic features. Amazing food.”

“We ordered 2 pie and chips. One of the pies was Burnt on the inside of the crust as well as being rock solid, the other pie and chips the pie you just couldn’t break it open the waitress was more than happy to replace it but we declined I guess my wife and mum were put off. I had nachos but again the food was rock solid. I asked for beef chilli with my food as I had to pay extra I really struggled to find the beef. I explained to the waitress she apologised then came back and we can take the 2 pie and chips off the bill I would have expected that’s as they hadn’t been eaten.but the waitress said we can’t take the nachos off the bill I had one mouthful of it. I just thought the cheek I am expected to pay for a meal I couldn’t eat I said I’m not paying for something I didn’t have. In the end the manager told the waitress to take that one off to. I have never been in that situation with being told that one. I won’t be returning.”

“We have visited this place now on 2 occasions in 2 different years and it is absolutely beautiful meals are fair priced and very well presented, truly tasty with empty plates each time. It’s a must to visit for a wonderful meal. 👍”

“Parking was the first issue — the car park is very small, difficult to find a space, and getting out was even harder due to inconsiderate drivers who hadn’t parked with any thought for others. I was really looking forward to visiting The Watermill, but sadly this visit didn’t match the great reviews I’d read. I was advised the beef would be very rare for the Sunday roast, but mine wasn’t pink at all — in fact, the meat was chewy and overcooked and not the best quality. The roast potatoes weren’t very nice at all — they had an odd taste, looked insipid, and could have been cooked for longer. As a coeliac, I couldn’t have the cauliflower cheese or the Yorkshire pudding, which means I’m paying the same price but receiving less on my plate. That’s the bit that niggles me, so I asked for a little extra veg — but it never arrived. The tiny spoon of swede was extremely peppery. Service was also disappointing. After we finished eating, staff walked past the table several times but didn’t clear plates, offer dessert, or ask if we wanted more drinks, so we left. When the bill arrived, the deposit I’d already paid hadn’t been deducted, and I had to go to the bar to get it corrected. The venue itself is pleasant, but unfortunately the food and service didn’t live up to expectations.”

“Customer service was great however the food was really really disappointing. It was also served suspiciously fast withing 10 mins of ordering. I had fish and chips, it come with frozen skin on fries and tasted like frozen birds eye battered cod. Why chunky chips or home cut chips are not the standard for a restaurant who had over 4 stars on Google and trip advisor is beyond me. Wife ordered the burger with no bacon, turned up with bacon... But the major issues was it wasn't let rest and all the grease leaked into the bun so it was like eating soggy bread and again just tasted like a Tesco burger patty not what you would expect. Other issues (with pictures) we had a side of onion rings that were swimming in oil at the bottom of the bowl, my kids dinners fish goujons and chips were the same, loads of oil at the bottom of the plate. Soft drinks had a wired taste that I can't explain. Desserts were not much better sticky toffee pudding was again served suspiciously quick with half melted ice cream, it was boiling in the inside and like warm on the out so clearly microwaved, to top it off I had finished it and my kids there Ice cream before my wife's desert arrived although TBF the Delice did look amazing but was weird it was like a dry ganache which was either part or previously frozen or stored in a fridge for too long. Overall the kitchen staff need massive improvement, they are rushing the food, not preparing it correctly, which is showing and not getting ordered ready to be served together for people as a group which ruins the experience.”
