Customer Review Summary
Lamb leads the praise, with reviewers singling out the lamb nihari, the lamb dansak with lentils and pineapple, and a haleem of lentils and lamb that the kitchen doubled into a main. Close behind are the beef shin katwa, a fish karahi, a vegetable karahi and a king prawn biryani with juicy prawns. Soft naan and roti from the tandoor and a peshwari naan with garlic, almonds and honey also get mentions. Several diners call the early evening Golden Hour set meal, which includes a bottle of Cobra, fantastic value, and others describe friendly staff and a welcoming owner. Criticism is smaller but specific. One diner found the chicken bhuna like curry paste and the mixed starter bland, and another found the spicy food lacking some depth of flavour. The room gets very busy and loud at weekends, and one reviewer advises booking. One diner recalls the owner bringing out sauce for a guest to taste so her lamb patha would not be too hot.

“Staying in Harrogate for a business trip. Saw the restaurant on Google maps and went in for a takeaway. Initially greeted by a waitress soon after yhe owner came over and greeted me. He was exceptionally welcoming, and a genuinely friendly chap. The food was very mouthwatering; the King Prawn Biryani was so tasty; the king prawns were juicy, the biryani rice was so flavoursome. The accompanying curry sauce was also very tasty with chunky pieces of a mixture of vegetables 😋. I also got complimentary mint sauce/salad.”

“I have visited Shalimar several times, every meal has felt warm and full of character. Jamil, the boss has spent 33 years in hospitality, he is diligent, well seasoned in the industry, attentive to his restaurant and understands both food and people. The lamb dishes are memorable. 🐐Lamb Dansak, a mild curry with lentils and pineapple has a lovely balance between richness, sweetness and spice. The lamb nihari with deep brown sauce, tender meat and warm spices remind me of the comforting Muslim breakfast in northern China, there is something familiar in warmth, slow cooking and depth of flavour. The seasoning feels balanced, there is harmony between spices, sauce and meat, so the customers can taste the ingredients. The fish karahi is also excellent, full of flavour. 🐟 The naan and roti arrived soft and tender, freshly cooked in the tandoor in the kitchen, with straight-from-tandoor freshness. The staff, the boss and the customers eat food coming from the same kitchen and the same ingredients. There is a generosity and humanity in that. I have been come here with my bear, and I have felt comfortable every time, it is about warm food, soft memories, experience, hospitality and the feeling that somebody has taken care over what reaches your table. Highly recommended. ✅”

“Food was bang average and just about eatable. The mix starter had a good selection but tasted bland but the dips enhanced it. The Main curry which was a chicken bhuna is what I can only describe as pataks curry paste! again it was eatable. Chapatis and popdums were good. Customer service was good too. Would I return? Probably not.”

“Visited the Shalimar tonight. Seen the Golden Hour menu which is a fantastic deal between 5:30 and 6:30 for only £16.99 for a 3 course meal and that includes a 660 ml bottle of Cobra. The meal was fantastic. Have been to the restaurant before many times so.knew what we were getting.”
