Customer Review Summary

Reviewers most often come for the haddock and chips, praising the crispy batter and generous fillet, with several calling the chips great and not greasy. The oversized special draws repeated comment, one likening it to two big fish end to end, and curry sauce, mushy peas and a pot of tea turn up alongside it, though one reviewer found lots of particulates in the curry sauce. The nautical decor, with Filey photographs and model boats, gets a mention, and several describe the service as quick and the staff as kind. Others describe it differently: one says staff shouted "take any table" across the floor and dumped cutlery down, and a customer left without ordering. The sharpest complaint concerns a sharing policy, where one family says they were refused sharing a special, a small portion and even a chip with a toddler, then found the four portions of chips they ordered instead old and refried, and say the manager seemed uninterested. Another reviewer watched staff handle a complaining table well, and a few note tables were easy to find midweek.

“Visited today with our 3-year-old son and my 78-year-old parents. We ordered the 20–24oz special fish and chips and were told we couldn’t order it because my husband and I intended to share it. We were told the portion was intended for one person, which seems extremely odd given how large the portion is. If it’s genuinely intended for one person, why serve such a huge portion and then refuse to allow two paying customers to share it? We were also told we couldn’t even share a chip with our 3-year-old, despite the sign on the door apparently stating that children were an exception. My elderly parents were likewise told they couldn’t order a small fish and chips to share between themselves. We were told these rules were for “health and safety”, despite us being happy to pay for the food. We ended up ordering four portions of chips, which unfortunately appeared to be old/refried and were very poor. We raised this with the manager/owner, who seemed completely uninterested in our concerns. I want to make clear that I don’t blame the waitress — she was simply following the instructions she had been given. Unfortunately, the whole experience left us very disappointed. I’d recommend checking the restaurant’s sharing policy before visiting, particularly if you’re a family or have elderly members of your party.”

“Got a special, never had a fish so big, was literally like two big fish end to end and side by side !. In hindsight a small fish would definitely had filled me up but I set about this special and just finished it. Bit pricey at 25quid but got to say the size of the fish and 500 chips and tasty curry/peas, it is worth the money, delicious if u can finish it. Note the size of tea cup next to fish to scale size of fish lol.”

“Excellent fish and chips at a fair price in the centre of Filey. As we went mid week, there were available tables, so we had no wait. Food fresh and tasty and great experience marred only by the family behind us who were complaining about their food, which the staff handled really well. Don't feel that it was a reflection on the restaurant, just a bad attitude from a picky eater and (most probably) a serial complainer. Cent wait to come back soon 😀”

“The restaurant fills up very quickly. Service wasn’t fast but not horrendous. The cod and chips were delicious and I guess the price reflects today’s economy. The curry sauce was nice and tasty but lots of particulates in there (might put some people off). All in all 4/5. Decent.”

“Lovely fish and chips. We had regular haddock and Chips curry sauce bread and butter pot of tea and a hot chocolate. £40”
