Quick info
About River Exe Cafe
River Exe Cafe is a seafood restaurant in Exmouth, set on a custom-built barge floating in the Exe Estuary. The only way to reach it is by boat, either a Puffin Water Taxi from Exmouth Marina or your own vessel. The water taxi brings diners back after a fixed two-hour slot, which sets the length of a visit. The menu is fairly small and built around fish, with a seafood platter, a squid starter and fish and chips. Vegan onion bhaji and vegan curry share the menu with vegetarian mains, so a mixed group can order together. The restaurant runs from April to September, open Tuesday to Sunday and closed Mondays. The Shore Shop at the marina stays open all year, selling local artwork and gin and taking bookings for the coming season.

Customer Review Summary
Reviewers most often return to the water taxi ride out to the floating barge and the fish dishes served there, with the hot fish platter singled out, along with the seafood platter, squid starter and a huge portion of fish and chips. Several describe the setting as having gorgeous 360 degree views, and others praise the friendly, efficient staff and generous portions. The blankets are mentioned as a welcome touch when it turns chilly, and cocktails and coffee are called superb. Cold weather on the boat is noted once. The main complaint concerns vegetarian choices: one party found both the cauliflower steak and the red Thai curry, the only two mains, underwhelming for their guests, though another reviewer enjoyed the vegan onion bhaji and vegan curry. One reviewer calls the menu fairly small and another says it is a little pricey. Several advise booking very early, and one notes the water taxi collects diners two hours after dropping them off.

“What a treat. Book well in advance to avoid disappointment. Taking the dedicated water taxi makes your arrival seem extra special. The food was very tasty and beautifully presented. I can't think of a better way to spend a summers evening.”

“Visited here for a birthday treat. Fantastic experience with the water taxi to travel to/from the restaurant then sitting on the floating restaurant with gorgeous 360degree views. Excellent setting and service. All the fish dishes were very good, particularly the hot fish platter. The vegetarian options could be improved. Both the cauliflower steak and the red Thai curry (the only 2 main choices) were both underwhelming and disappointing for our 2 vegetarian guests. A hot summers day didnt really warrant a curry, something more imaginative like vegetable tart, summer salad etc would have been more welcome. Overall a lovely day and nice to know there is also the option of getting the water taxi over for a drink/light bite.”

“Superb lunch on a gloriously sunny day. Setting speaks for itself, food was first class and matched by genuinely friendly and efficient staff. Will definitely return with friends for a night out/lunchtime treat to remember, at a truly special location.”

“Great restaurant in the middle of the Exe. Fairy small menu, with well cooked food. With the water taxi time slots, you have a fixed 2hrs, and they spread it out well to cover that time.”
