Customer Review Summary

Welcoming staff are the draw reviewers raise most, from the carvery chefs to table servers, with one describing a gentle approach to helping a diner with dementia back to her table. Food comes close behind: the beef, turkey and gammon are called excellent, and several describe hot, good value plates. One reviewer suggests booking around midday. The caveats are specific. One diner found the parsnips dry, the cauliflower overcooked and the macaroni cheese below other branches, blaming food warmers set too hot. Another says meat portions have shrunk, even with go large, and slices are cut too thin to pick up with a fork. A watery mint sauce also gets a mention. One group arriving ten minutes late for a booked Friday breakfast was told the kitchen had moved on to lunches and was offered leftovers that were not enough for four adults, from a server they found rude.

“After having a enjoyable calvery on the Sunday at 5pm, we found food good value, plenty choice and food hot. Atmospher tense as an elderly gentle had fallen an awaiting paramedics which was a concern for everyone as he was inside at the enterance. We booked for breakfast on the Friday at 10.30 as heading for home. Unfortuantly we were delayed coming out of Exmouth due to various roadworks. We we 10 minutes late and were told the kitchen had stopped cooking and now starting lunches, fair enough I suppose but we were booked in.. We were offered what was left but not enough for 4 adults. The lady server was quite rude and said no discount would be offered which we hadnt even suggested. As we were leaving I over heard another server say they were bookings.”

“Kaci and all the staff gave us a very warm welcome, Toby Carvery lived up to its regular good standard of food both visits this week. Easy parking, easy access and dog friendly in the bar area, absolute bonus. Thank you for lovely hot food and a very friendly welcome each time.”

“Visited Toby Carvery late on a weekday evening and so it was quiet. Food however still looked nice and fresh and there was still plenty to choose from. Our Server ‘Ryan’ was really friendly and welcoming and looked after us well from start to finish with a smile. Will be back”

“I came with my elderly mother who struggles with dementia. The staff took a lovely approach to helping her back to her table with her plate of food. The food was good value and tasted great. The only small thing was the mint sauce a little too watery, but other than that a great place to come.”

“We’ve visited this Toby Carvery twice, once for breakfast and once for Sunday dinner . On both occasions, the staff were lovely, welcoming and helpful, and the restaurant itself was very nice and well looked after . Unfortunately, during our Sunday dinner, we were a little disappointed with some of the food .The food warmers seemed to be set far too hot, which affected the quality of the vegetables Some had become quite dry from sitting under the heat, particularly the parsnips, while the cauliflower was extremely soft and overcooked. The macaroni cheese was also disappointing and wasn’t the same quality or consistency that we normally enjoy at other Toby Carvery branches. It’s a shame because everything else about our visits was great, especially the staff and the atmosphere. With a little more attention to the temperature of the food warmers and the quality of the vegetables, it would have been a much better experience. We would still be happy to visit again and hope the food is better next time.”
