About Toby Carvery Exeter
On Rydon Ln in Exeter, Toby Carvery Exeter is a carvery that pairs its roast dinners with an all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet, and dogs are welcome. At the carving station, a server carves the roast meat, which comes with vegetables and gravy. A Yorkshire pudding is served with the roast dinner. Vegetarian and vegan gravy is available in a separate jug for allergy orders. Guests with allergies enter the allergens they cannot eat on an iPad, and the food is brought to the table. The dessert menu includes a build-your-own dessert and a summer berry sundae. The restaurant has been recently refurbished, and tables can be booked.

Customer Review Summary
The carvery counter is what reviewers dwell on, and opinions split. Praise centers on fresh, hot roast meats and a good selection of veg, with a mac and cheese Yorkshire pudding wrap, vegetarian gravy and a summer berry sundae singled out, plus a build your own dessert that one grandson loved. Waiting staff and front of house draw the warmest comments, described as polite, welcoming and attentive even when the restaurant got busy. One diner with allergies describes the food being brought to the table, with vegan gravy in its own jug. The complaints are specific. One visit brought thin scraps of beef and a dismissive reply when a little more was requested. Another found the meat bone dry, the Yorkshire pudding shattered, the cauliflower cheese like soup and the gravy with a thick skin. One group found no lamb on a weekend despite a sign advertising it. Drinks were slow, and one diner had to chase them before a glass was plonked on the bar without an apology.

“I am very disappointed with today’s visit. We paid £41 for a meal for two people. Beef is usually our favourite choice and one of the main reasons we visit Toby Carvery, especially for breakfast and roast dinners. However, today the portion of beef was extremely poor. We were given what looked like thin scraps of meat rather than a proper serving. It honestly felt as though the chef was deliberately trying to save meat and expected customers to fill their plates with vegetables and side dishes instead. For the price charged, this was unacceptable and looked almost ridiculous. While the meat was being carved, I politely asked whether I could have a little more. The person serving, who I understand was the chef, responded in an aggressive and dismissive manner. His tone and choice of words were not appropriate for someone working in customer service. The issue was not only the small portion. It was also the attitude. Customers paying over £40 for a meal should not be spoken to in that way or made to feel uncomfortable for asking for a reasonable portion. This was not the standard I would expect from Toby Carvery and it has made me question whether the approach to portion sizes and customer service has changed.”

“Had Katie as our waitress. A busy Wednesday afternoon yet was still polite, professional and nothing was too much trouble. Excellent service and a credit to the Toby staff, from a former M&B & Whitbread manager. Food was faultless, front of house chef was great fun too. Can not rate any higher!”

“Daniel gets 5 stars for being sweet, polite and attentive. He started his shift half way through us eating and he was an absolute sweetheart. It was quiet in the restaurant but he made himself busy. But the rest was diabolical. And deserved zero stars. The carvery chef grunted at us. Food looked and tasted like it had been stewing on the carvery deck for hours. Meat bone dry. Yorkshire pudding shattered. Cauliflower cheese like soup. Gravy with a thick skin. Spoons to dish out food blistering hot, food cold and sloppy. I had to chase our drinks once we had sat with our food for a while, no apology just plonked on the bar infront of me. We ate here for convenience as staying at the hotel next door. Honestly utterly terrible….shame because Toby carveries are usually quite consistent.”

“I especially loved the warming, welcoming vibes of all the staff, and how ULTRA AMAZINGLY AWESOMELY delish my Mac & 🧀 Yorkshire Pudding wrap was, alongside the vegetarian gravy doused 🥔 were lush too . If Heavenly Paradise can manifest on Planet 🌍, my sitting, along with the summer berry sundae was a prime example. Thank you everyone. ☺️”

“Great service today ,our first visit at this particular branch as we are on our travels. Welcomed by a gentlemen on front of house who was happy to offer us a choice of seats to sit . Very welcoming and polite, later found out his name was Bax. Very smart gent. Carvery was excellent ,fresh, hot and flavourful and the station super clean. Staff throughout seem happy in their workplace. Drinks order taking immediatly after being seated. Desserts offered after our meal. Very clean throughout, spotless in fact. Quite a large site. Wheelchair friendly access and toilets. Lots of parking avaliable . Seems to be loved by the regulars as can hear general chit chat which is wonderful. Apparently had a refurbishment in December which is loved by staff and customers that have seen the change Great atmosphere overall successful visit.”
